any good ideas for a 15" mbpro bag/pack... specifically something cheap and doesn't look like I am carrying a $2k computer on me?

IMO, Dakine makes some of the best backpacks for laptops. Comfortable to wear, and stylish without being utterly pretentious.

you want a hands free carrying bag [backpack/ cross body] or a hands on [business breif//attache] or even a roller?
there is plenty of cases out there for the $50 price point
if you goto the office store retail channels like Staples, Office Max, Best Buy, Kmart, Target, Costco.. you will find the same styling of computer laptop storage all with different gimmicks on their exteriors and all with padded interiors.
if you wanted something less business styling then go for any of the outdoor daypack brands and purchase a pack and also a removable laptop sleeve as those packs arent designed for computer storage but will most likely have a designated sleeve section. If you can spare more funds towards your purchase, you can get the evolved daypacks that are designed with the laptop carrier in mind as well as their design features, but the $50 range may only yeild a certain style that generally is too loud in pattern or colour and or has some sort of gimmick applied to it.
figure out what kind of bag you want, and what you will be carrying inside of it b4 looking for a random suggestion from here.. then come back and ask away..
but there is a ton of places to check out.. here are a few there are endless brands more to find:
here is a military style case in your price range:

I don't get it.
You buy a branded computer for 2000$,
not a higher spec'd one (albeit with less shiny logo) for half the price,
yet insist on a 50$ budget for something to carry- and protect it with.Or even worse...you're even considering to throw it down a backpack.
Millimeters of nylon fabric offers little protection. You're going to use this thing daily, amongs people who might just judge you a wee bit based on appearance (really...a backpack?!?). And it's not your last laptop/device you're going to own. So there's really is no reason not to invest in a bag for it that will last. And looks good.
Get something sturdy, say leather, and make sure it's a mans bag and not a purse.
- I think he wants a cheap bag so people won't know he has a expensive laptop to stealpinkfloyd
- hahaha Peter.. you speak such a nice harsh reality.. i love it..epill
- Sorry, but many of those $200 bags offer no more protection than some of the $50 ones.Josev
- Take the Jack Spade bags, for instance, they're more for fashion than utility.Josev
- Josev, I don't remember dropping a number. Anyways, the "some offer this" and "that" argument goes both ways.Peter
- Yes, it does go both ways. But you're the one who says a lower priced bag isnt worth it.Josev
- I have an 8yr. old InCase bag that I paid 65.00 for. It's the best bag Ive ever owned.Josev
- 50$, however, goes nowhere for me ;)
In the end don't take my opinion too personal: It's your gear.Peter - aa, replyed before I commented.Peter
- Hey wait, you're not OP.
Jack Spade?Peter

peter, I agree with your logic but to be clear there are many "backpacks" suitable for carrying an expensive laptop. I used the term lightly and meant a backpack with a padded laptop sleeve.
as far as being judged by appearance I'd rather look like I had a backpack on than carrying a very expensive piece of equipment. Sort of like how seasoned pro photogs travel with the most beat up low key luggage.
I know this is ironic considering I bought an apple product but I think the whole $200+ leather bag thing is overrated. I carried 40 pounds of gear comfortably in a ultra thin "mm of nylon" backpack from mt. whitney to yosemite valley and that pack only costed me $175. I'm pretty sure I can spend $50 (probably even less!) on something that will last for years and protect my investment.

if you dont mind spending an extra 20-25 dollars, you can get a very well made, well protected, non flashy, and comfortable and functional case that will in the end suit all your needs. the 50 dollar price point case.. well you are looking at a case that is most likely designed at a very low cost, and only sold at that price point to make a profit.
Peter makes a very strong argument. in his defense by all means, he is advising you to purchase with the thought that your purchase will last longer and be an investment. a leather case can last forever, and can forever be stylish in any time period. but the cost behind its origins gets retails up there.. not saying you cant get a leather case for your price point, just saying its function may not suit your needs..
for the nylon world of bags, you generally want something fitted for the function of your needs. generally the price points of $69+ is where you see real function being designed around the interiors.
you just need to add some funds to your budget and start to look for something that will benefit your necessity to conceal your personals.
i personally love army/ military style cases. i have been using the same Helmet style bag for over 22 years. it has no logos, and is all nylon.. it has no shoulder strap.. it serves all my needs.
you should check out the army/ navy surplus stores.. you may find a styling that can last lifetimes.. and is timeless in its style and is something that doesnt scream "laptop here" and can be form fitted to serve as a laptop carrying case. - or not..
also for a nicer very functionalized case that is sleek go for incase.. or for more function with fashion elements, go for Booq.. i personally love the "mamba" collection http://www.booqbags.com/All-Prod…
they have black denim interiors, its something you never see anywhere but perhaps in boutiques in japan.. also the cases are very sleek and function heavy and made for laptops..
in the end there are so many choices, and you alone have to decidde what is your identity and then go after what you want that follows your personal look.. or just go for the "black bag" its the #1 selling colour!!

I prefer a sleeve and then several bags, depending on what my mission is.

Yeah, I see where you're getting at with backpacks.
The Eastpaks way up there didn't really help.Sure, there are times that values backpacks, such as if you're skiing or snowboarding and want to haul some gear. But not in the city. That's just wrong.
IT'S WRONG!There should be a ban on those things.
I agree, some seasoned photographers go low key. Especially IF they are in environments that demands it. A jungle, or in the middle of Iraq. If they're also journalists or otherwise reporting you have to make that distinction too. But low key doesn't mean a nylon pack. Even that low key canvas bag that there goes through the sands of Iraq would probably have gone for a bit more than 50$.
If not leather I do believe they opt for a rough canvas. Whatever lasts. Not the cheap looking bag with cheap quality and build.Speaking of...
Other seasoned photographers, the seasonally seasoned ones, could have a crew that carry their equipment. Or at least a car. And carry it all in cases lined with steel and foam compartment padding, or something made for their equipment. Whatever the case: no one of those photographers are succumbing to the backpack, I can assure you.Not to mentioned...you're not comparing your laptop needs with that of a rugged photographer, are you know?
One equipment would last quite a few days, where as one would require an electric outlet within a few hours.Anyways, I think I've made my point. 2000$ equipment being hurled in $50 bags. I see it ever so often. And I almost weep every time.
I leave on the note that leather can be low key too. But mostly my claim is that it will last. Quality for your quality pieces that deserves it, that's where I am getting at. No matter how much one might argue that it differs from what others do, wear or carry their stuff in.
