peter, I agree with your logic but to be clear there are many "backpacks" suitable for carrying an expensive laptop. I used the term lightly and meant a backpack with a padded laptop sleeve.
as far as being judged by appearance I'd rather look like I had a backpack on than carrying a very expensive piece of equipment. Sort of like how seasoned pro photogs travel with the most beat up low key luggage.
I know this is ironic considering I bought an apple product but I think the whole $200+ leather bag thing is overrated. I carried 40 pounds of gear comfortably in a ultra thin "mm of nylon" backpack from mt. whitney to yosemite valley and that pack only costed me $175. I'm pretty sure I can spend $50 (probably even less!) on something that will last for years and protect my investment.
