i agree with paul's "not for print arguement"... old rules of traditional logo design are not always relevant these days.

I'd stick with your design with the type and pin but play with the type and use the map as a secondary element (like in one of my previous posts) someone posted the type in Helvetica which is a nice start and is clean to read at smaller sizes. You want the logo to be your design not someone elses, for better or worse.

The old rules for print logos aren't always relevant anymore, true.
But... when someone says to knock off the drop shadows and extraneous gradient effects, its probably because the original concept sucks and said creator of logo is focusing too much on the extra details and not enough on the base form of which those details rest.
