Liam Neeson will reprise his role of Ra's Al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, it has been revealed.
The actor played the villainous leader of the League Of Shadows in Batman Begins, and it has now emerged that he will also appear in Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film.
Production notes for Wrath Of The Titans, in which Neeson plays Zeus, reveal that he is returning, reading: "Neeson next appears in Peter Berg's actioner Battleship and he also will be seen in Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated action thriller The Dark Knight Rises."
Al Ghul appeared to die in the first film, but in the comics he obtained healing properties and an expanded lifespan through the use of 'Lazarus Pits'. It is not known whether Neeson;’s appearances will be the timeline of the film or in flashback. However, it is known that Josh Spence will appear as a younger version of the character.
Al Ghul's "if you make yourself more than a man" speech from Batman Begins also features in the first teaser trailer for the film, which you can watch above.
However, last year, Neeson denied that he would be appearing, saying: "That rumour's totally not true. In the comic books, Ra's Al Ghul goes into a life bath of some sort and immerses himself to become immortal. So that’s probably where that comes from."
The Dark Knight Rises is released on July 20.

Just saw on FB that Liam confirmed that he just has a cameo in the movie, which means it's some sort of flashback. There is no way in these realistic batman movies would Nolan ever do something as ridiculous as the Lezarus Pit. It would be so out of place from the last 2 movies it just would not make any sense.

I dunno about that. I mean Nolan has focused on the more human of characters, but they have exited the realm of possibility before. Everyone forgets that it seemed like Ra's survived the burning of the temple at first, which nobody questioned, and then he returns at the end of Batman Begins.

Bruce saved him though. It wasn't like we thought he died there. Then at the end he died in a huge train crash and explosion. He's dead. There is no way Nolan would use some magical pit to bring him back to life. It just would not fit at all.
We know his daughter Talia is in Rises, plus Bane who we assume is working for the still existing League of Shadows, so my guess is there is some sort of scene with him and Ra's at some point before Ra's death. Maybe even during the plot of BB, before he meets Bruce again. By that point Ra's knows Bruce has turned on him.
Ra's saying something to Bane like "Bruce knows about us, and even if I die, I need you to finish what we started." That would explain how Bane knows who Batman is and is able to break into Wayne Enterprises and steal all those Tumblers, and the shot of Bane standing over a beaten Bruce, not Batman.
