Liam Neeson will reprise his role of Ra's Al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, it has been revealed.

The actor played the villainous leader of the League Of Shadows in Batman Begins, and it has now emerged that he will also appear in Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film.

Production notes for Wrath Of The Titans, in which Neeson plays Zeus, reveal that he is returning, reading: "Neeson next appears in Peter Berg's actioner Battleship and he also will be seen in Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated action thriller The Dark Knight Rises."

Al Ghul appeared to die in the first film, but in the comics he obtained healing properties and an expanded lifespan through the use of 'Lazarus Pits'. It is not known whether Neeson;’s appearances will be the timeline of the film or in flashback. However, it is known that Josh Spence will appear as a younger version of the character.

Al Ghul's "if you make yourself more than a man" speech from Batman Begins also features in the first teaser trailer for the film, which you can watch above.

However, last year, Neeson denied that he would be appearing, saying: "That rumour's totally not true. In the comic books, Ra's Al Ghul goes into a life bath of some sort and immerses himself to become immortal. So that’s probably where that comes from."

The Dark Knight Rises is released on July 20.
