Hi All, I've just received an email from a client I did a flash site for 3 years ago. He has had some success, wants to have someone else do the update and is requesting the FLA's. We had nothing in writing as I was pulled into the job under a 3rd party and ultimately completed the bulk of the project and was paid in full.
What would you do?
I don't want to screw the guy, but ultimately would like to explain that he bought the finished product, not the tools I used to create it.
How would you reply?
Also, how much would be fair to request for completed fla's and file structure to a 25-30 page site.
Thanks.

am i the only moron who doesn't understand why you don't just give him the FLAs?
- programming scripts that have taken hours shouldn't be given away for free.jetSkii
- yes, you are. he sold a working site. not working project files.ephix
- pft well that shouldn't be a prob if you use external .as files. but yeah, didn't think of that.mcmillions
- if the client doesn't get the external .as files, he's just gonna come back and ask for themjetSkii
- but you are right in the sense that the client should get an FLAjetSkii
- lol @ external as files.moldero

If you did not work with them directly, you have no obligation to hand over anything.
Now you can hand over the files and buddies with them and try to get work out of them

You said it best: "explain that he bought the finished product, not the tools I used to create it."
What would YOU be comfortable with for letting the fla go? Why doesn't he have you update it?

Rights buy-out for something like photography is often equivalent to a day fee, or the work fee for the gig itself.
So say it cost 1500 for you to do what you did. If he wants the source, and you go bye-bye, charge another 1500 for a buyout of the code and authoring files.

It was a 5k job, I am considering asking $800 for the flas vs. giving them to him as I didn't address it beforehand. He has a "friend" that is doing some work for him, which is fine, but also the reason I don't want to just hand them over.

No.
don't give them

If the FLA is only presenting information, just give it to them. Unless there is a software component, then the client should respect that the FLA contains programming features that go beyond what was initially paid for. However, that being the case, why did you use them when the client did not ask for them?

just give them blank fla's and say it was all done externally with proprietary actionscripting.
- dbloc0
or give them an FLA with gay porn in it.

learn about swc's and never have this problem again?
- uan0
if you have no obligation to deliver the flas, sell them for a good price
- uan0
and sell him also a proper documentation

I always give out the FLA's whenever I finish a project. Unless you're coding some rocket-science project that no one else has discovered and you plan on winning a Nobel peace prize with it...chances are it has been done a million times over. On top of that, if they REALLY wanted the source code, they could always decompile.
Just hand over the FLA and say, if you wanted me to take care of these changes since I'm familiar with the site and source, I'd charge you $XXX.
Don't piss your client off for something so stupid.

is jetskii a new name for an existing member or a welcome addition to the shining beacon of intelligent thought that is qbn?

an architect designs your house, do you have the rights to the blue-prints?

Also, developers look at it like 'Hey, you're stealing my f-ing genius code!". Since we're talking about FLA's here and not AS files, which likely contain mainly design elements, think of it from a different perspective. What if you hired a web designer to design a site for you, and when the designer was complete, all he handed back was flattened JPG's and no layered PSD's AI's, etc? And then when you asked him for the PSD's, he says you have to pay for those...that'd be a pretty dick move IMO.

I'm with fyoucher1. If you wanted to make an issue out of the FLAs being an additional expense, you should have noted that up front. The client should have a way to edit their own site after 3 years!

A body modification artist fashions you an excellent Lord of the Rings cock ring. Does that mean you have the rights to his cocksmithee tools and Elvish manuals, too?
- can i get your body mod artists number?ephix
- Just blow through a ram's horn and shout "Oh Reginald!"harlequino
- oh i already had itephix

i'm just curious, what is it in the fla that you're trying to protect?
