I start with "I run an advertising production agency" but that usually leads to more questions. I've found a way to sum it up in a minute or less:
I produce and create various pieces of online advertising they see for new movies, music and some automotive and luxury products including but not limited to websites, banners, facebook stuff, games, and applications. Not much that I do is for just pure entertainment -- and is usually linked to a specific campaign that is created to inspire product or ticket sales directly or indirectly. For that reason, most of what I do doesn't live on the internet forever and has an expiration date. Depending on who I'm talking to (old people), I may also tell them that this is the new way companies spotlight interest things they want the general public buy, along with a TV broadcoast campaign, and sometimes in lieu of print, newspapers, fliers, and older forms of traditional advertising. It also helps reach the younger generations where they do most of their research.
That tends to make a lot of sense across all generations that have asked me without getting to complicated about it and stops the questions.

i have this problem.
i hate the question , i always feel like i answer badly and come off sounding like a twat.i direct films, i do animation - both directing and actual animation and do art directing for agencies. there is no way im going to say im a 'creative' so i normally fumble around those things and end with, basically i work in advertising.

been working freelance as a web/motion designer for 10+ years, though these days almost full time at a production company as a DA/Director on commercials and the odd music video. Love the freelance life but would be stupid to drop this opportunity.
