I'm about to start somewhere new. The CMS I used in my last digs, was built internally, probably based on some open source, it was pretty versatile, let you drag and drop content, assets etc around the layout. Looking to see anything similar out there, but in general really, what's the best out there in your opinion?
Cheers,

There isn't one solution for everything. Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, Expression Engine... they are all awesome and totally shitty at the same time.

I'm a big fan of Wordpress. It has security issues *if you don't keep it updated* but the support community is massive and helpful (the most important thing in my opinion) and the dashboard GUI is one of the best. It's also decently fast if you cache it.

Endless research is possible.... I've come to hate drupal, like Wordpress and investigate Concrete5.... just pick 2 and start testing....
If you find yourself fighting one CMS, either try to limit your project to what the CMS can do or switch CMS's.... or roll your own....
Sometimes adding your own feature to a CMS is harder than writing it from scratch as it has to hook into all sorts of stuff....i.e. Drupalismo sucketh because you have to do everything their way and retrain your brain too much for my taste....
- Concrete is ok. A bit lacking but good for building a basic site for someone with no exp.ornj

OK.. another thought... depends on your client base....
Some clients are "custom" oriented.... if they hear you used wordpress and a bunch of free plugins they may think "but my brother's kid could do that?!?!" .... so obscure = your esoteric knowledge in their minds sometimes....
Some clients see a custom CMS as a vendor-lock-in trick.... so they want you to use wordpress or something like it, not something they've never heard of....

This post, along with the comments at the bottom, is a nice jumping off point to research which CMS best fits your site's needs:

I had one built for me for my first ever content driven site (http://www.themill.com/) about 5 years, and i didn't know php then, but since have learned it and made it better for each client... I even have a bit of drag n' drop in there.
But for the most part I make it look distinctly different from the site, as not every person is a designer who uses it, and its built so that different people can do different tasks and it all meets in the middle, and the client likes the outcome at the end as it 'magically' gets transformed into a site.
Glad I don't have to rely on other CMS's that may not do what I want.
