Endless research is possible.... I've come to hate drupal, like Wordpress and investigate Concrete5.... just pick 2 and start testing....
If you find yourself fighting one CMS, either try to limit your project to what the CMS can do or switch CMS's.... or roll your own....
Sometimes adding your own feature to a CMS is harder than writing it from scratch as it has to hook into all sorts of stuff....i.e. Drupalismo sucketh because you have to do everything their way and retrain your brain too much for my taste....
- Concrete is ok. A bit lacking but good for building a basic site for someone with no exp.ornj
