ok comparing the d5000 (£464.98) with the E-PL1 (£458.60), very similar prices. Kit lenses only.Indoor controlled test -
E-PL1 iso 1600 - http://www.imaging-resource.com/…D5000 iso 1600 - http://www.imaging-resource.com/…
Id say even, the d5000 has more noise, more detail, the E-pl1 less noise, slightly less detail. Just different approaches to processing.
Outdoor day scene -
EPL1 - http://www.imaging-resource.com/…D5000 - http://www.imaging-resource.com/…
When viewing the centre of the image the D5000 suffers greatly, its much much softer than the E-PL1.
Colour and Iso 3200 tests -
EPL1 - http://www.imaging-resource.com/…D5000 - http://www.imaging-resource.com/…
I would say its hard to tell which looks best. perhaps leaning towards the D5000 being slightly cleaner than the E-PL1. That said the E-PL1 is marginally sharper, i think its just a processing difference again, perhaps in the D5000 favor.
So all in all, to my eyes they are fairly even, but when taking into account that daylight scene, it really favors the E-PL1 by quite a margin, that sharpness difference is quite large.
When you say "these cameras are a small limited system" i would agree, but they are clearly as good as DSLR's of equal pricing as seen above.
Obviously the E-PL1 lacks an EVF and the fast focus of the D5000, but on pure image quality for me its a winner.

atkinson, the above info may be of use to you also. Make you a bit happier with your purchase :)
- yeah thatks - couldn't be happier, it's a great little camera!Atkinson

I have a soft spot for that nx10 such a lovely little cam.
Sadly it too has been proven to be worse it pretty much every respected when compared to the gf1 and e-pl1. Even in low light, despite sensor sizes.
Have you had a play with one? It feels really nice, nice view finder too.

Lets bring this back up, it's been nearly 6 months. The GF2 is coming but is touch screen. GF1 / EPL1 still winning?
In the mean time I've had an S95 and a GRD3, keep wanting to give micro 4/3 another crack though!
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Atkinson did you get the Epl1 and 20mm pancake and weren't satisfied?
If so I wouldn't be too interested in the GF2. there are no major improvements over the GF1 other than the size of it and the touch screen (which would be useful).
Also worth bearing in mind that the EPL1 takes slightly (only a small amount) sharper pics than the GF1 (and the ep1/2 and G1/2) due to it's lighter AA filter. Only noticable at 100% crops when pixel peeping.
Overall it's not an advance in IQ, same parts as GF1. But I've yet to see a full review, I'd be surprised if the IQ was different.

haha, yeah, well no. The two things I wasn't fussed about was the lag between shots on the EPL1 and the un-pocketability of it. However, since then and having used the S95 [which is great for what it is] and the GRD3 [which is better] I miss the IQ of the 20mm lens / camera perhaps. I don't think the GF2 is for me unless I get used to touch screen cameras but the size of it is appealing. I really dislike the look of the Fuji X100. There seems to be some ok prices on the GF1 with the 20mm, and the new 14mm lens seems nice too if not as fast.
Really I'm waiting for a wide fixed lens m4/3 type sensor camera that's small. I might be waiting a while though.

I shoot primarily GF1...

@atkinson
yeh the EPL1 has bad shot-to-shot lag, i always warn people of it if they are interested. The GF1 (and i assume the GF2 also) is v v snappy. Thats why i bought the GF1, felt more like a a DSLR, very quick and high performance.
The S95 is ace, tiny little camera! is the GRD3 better IQ? (fixed lens right?). Gotta love geek camera chat!

nice, makes me want to cut down trees, makes me want to sing, makes me want to wear womens clothes
If you've never seen Monty Python that will mean nothing

S95 is great. GRD3 is better for street. All lights can be turned off so it's stealth-like! Snap mode is great. Raw to bw is fantastic. Jpegs are rubbish but then I don't use them. The UI is great too. It's a little bigger than the S95 but for walking and holding that's a good thing. It looks military and is built as such. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dra…
that's raw to bw with clarity upped a bit.- wow! that pic is really sharp!! amazing.
that you eh handsome?? :DHombre_Lobo_2

Just out of interest, and I know it's not a m4/3, does anyone know how the Canon tsi1 / kiss / eos 550d stands up in terms of IQ to the m4/3 range?
Then the Sony SLT A55 and the Panasonic G2?!
- Hombre_Lobo_20
@atkinson
The sony Nex 5 from what reviews ive read isnt as good as the E-PL1, The e-pl1 is sharper and better at high iso. The nex does have some nice feature though, sweep panorama, 1 press HDR etc.
IIRC the t1i and t2i (550d) are better in every respect than any m43 camera. in particular the Dynamic Range. BUT amazingly, despite the smaller sensor the olympus pens are better at high iso than both the t1i and t2i (550d)
see for yourself. 550D high iso -

Heres some threads regarding your A55 interest. The panasonic G2 will have slightly less sharper pics than your E-pl1,

blimey, everything points to the EPL1! Just a shame is quite slow. I think overall what I want is, in no order:
Always RAW
Street [not too bothered about being subtle]
Excellent IQ
Fast / kids / moving stuff
Decent low-light
Ability to alter DOF
Video [the HQ the better but not at the expense of photo IQ]
