My Illustrator files are pristine. And the code I hand off is just as clean. I like to think it's because I respect other people who may need to handle my files in the future. The reality is that I must do this so when I look at the files tomorrow morning I have at least a partial clue where I am and what my name is. I'm not so keen on mornings. It's like watching Memento.

- Fucking seriously! I also revisit files, sometimes years later, and it's refreshing to know they're how they should be.monospaced

worst of all are illustrator files.
i used to work with a creative director who makes compositions with illustrator, whether for web or print. she would create all the pages with one file, in one layer. she would pick colors from different palettes and never delete the ones she doesn't use. she would also have the folders for the linked files in different place in her computer. either that, she would embed all the files and ending up with a huge file that would take forever to open and save. making final comps from her files, half the day is spent sorting out which elements goes to which composition and finding all the linked files.
from this experience, i've learned to make my files, my codes and my filing system as clean and clear as possible. even if they're only for me.
- See, your CD thinks like a CD. You think like a minion?boobs

No offense to anyone in particular... but
We all like to think we have the perfect system, and we all probably do, but truth is, when that file gets on someone else's hands, is going to be a nightmare..
NO MATTER HOW TIDY AND ORGANIZED YOU THINK YOU ARE
I mean, of course there are extreme situations were the files are just going to be a complete mess, and there is a big chance that either of these happened:
a) Whoever made the file originally is not really a designer, but your client's niece.
b) Is a designer in training, be nice and explain how to do it.
(remember that were were all there at some point)c) He was your new client's previous designer, and your client owe him money, but decided that they would rather scam someone else, he has every right to give you a complete mess (and you better thank him that he even consider giving you the files).

Hey,
It's nice and all to keep your files clean. Sometimes you don't have a neat little thing we all need to a better job called ENOUGH FUCKING TIME.
- jk. I'm ocd with my layers. As for the system, if youre an interactive designer your layers should follow your wireframe semanticscannonball1978
- This is so true. Good design and production takes time.Josev
- nah, good design get's pulled out of your ass on a tight deadline with an extra rush job thrown in for kicks.monNom

Also, when I get a shitty layered file thats enormous, I send it back as unacceptable. It's like getting your dinner without the plate and fork, or even uncooked.

what is worse.. getting handed work from a lazy ass designer or being advised on the job by a lazy ass creative director?
- equalmonospaced
- handed shit thrown together work from a moronic overpaid CDPIZZA
- is the worstPIZZA
- cannonball19780
The cd part, because they are getting paid more
- CockDiesel0
yeah, what did you need?
oh thought you were talking to me directly.

I can deal with un-named layers. If I were to make a complaint, I just want poeple to delete layers not used. When half the layers aren't used it drives me nuts :p

I hate cunts that use a new text field in photoshop for every bit of text in a site design.
Learn to use the character dialog box you lazy cunts.
Plus people who use guides that dont snap to pixel.. wtf?
:)
- autoflavour0
layers? i just do everything in paint
- MHDC0
In a perfect world... Yeah name every layer. Reality... Jus dump the proper layers into named layer sets according to wires and use the auto select for layers...
- autoflavour0
I do name my layers..
layer 1
layer 2
layer 3

i like when there's no layer comps, then designers say oh you missed something, its in a folder somewhere.
GETFUCKED!

i understand your frustration, and i feel your pain. but there are certain exceptions to this rule:
client: we need 2-3 concepts for each of these 4 situations for a friday presentation (it's currently wednesday).
me: sure.
-scrammble-drag/drop-scrammble-s... layer-scrammble--scrammble-drag... 235- etc. etc.file>send
well, actually i would probably make sure that i cleaned my shit up and sent a clean copy, but for my own working files in a time crunch, different story until i get the time to fix em. now where the hell is that star shape layer 236? no! not you, you fucking square no fill layer at the top that merely creates the border! fuckkkk!
- Apple + N, then type some shit. Layer naming problem solved? seems pretty easy and quick to me.instrmntl
- at times, yes. but usually i am working with a bunch of psd/ai files and dragging/dropping from all into one.lvl_13
- quickly. so to spend the extra time for concepts can result in a lot of wasted time up front. key words are "up front"lvl_13
- that is when the concepts just need to get out the door for presentation. you take the "awaiting feedback" stage as a cleanup session.lvl_13
- a cleanup session before the files get handed of.lvl_13
- i hear yainstrmntl
- making excuses for just being incompetent. bet you work fucking slow in realityPIZZA
- oooh, we got an internet bully on our hands!lvl_13
- of course not in a crunch, but afterwards if there's time and bits and pieces as you go, at the very least (you know "navigation", "footer", etc.?)Geith
