No Man's Sky is legit amazing. Started on a planet and immediately began to take damage from radiation - ok - nothing like impending death to make you quickly understand the coloured-coded material system. Collect yellow items = prevent death. Cool. Next. Collect red items to recharge various things. Sweet. Collect blue materials to regain health. Got it.

Ooh. What's that? A question mark on my scanner. Guess i'll head towards it. But wait - there's a cave with stuff in it. Hold up, there are some weird looking animals over there... Now my ship is repaired and I can go into space? Fucking yes. But what about the cave and animals? Space / animals / space / animals... SPACE!!! Blast off through the clouds and into a asteroid belt with some cool-looking freighters. You can shoot them and collect materials? On it... Oh fuck, it's the space cops!

Yeah. This, only after an hour or so, is the fucking tits. The pure joy of exploring not only planetside but the galaxy as well - be as aggressive or benign as you wish, spend 14 hours or 14 minutes exploring a planet because, y'know, there's like another 400 billion of them.

    • remember Spore? Promised the same revelations but delivered only mundane repetition.dorkKn1ght
    • way more than 400 billion, 18 quintillion:

      ernexbcn
    • Spore was garbage from the off and didn't let you shoot robots, climb mountains, engage in off-world space battles or explore a galaxy.face_melter
    • It was a rubbery, Play-Doh version of Little Computer People.face_melter

^-- I played for like 5 hours last night. My home planet was freezing balls, like -90C, so, yeah, I hit the ground running. I'm well on my way to getting a good standing with the local peeps, started up some trading, got a new weapon/mining tool, but I'm afraid if I explore too much, I won't be able to find my home planet again. I've grown fond of it!

    • Mine was pretty nice I see, got in a fight with some robots pretty early, other than that, no radiation or freezing temp.elektro
    • Had to walk 30 minutes to get some Heredium, but explored a lot on the way.elektro

NMS is fun for about 5 hours, until you realize the gameplay loop is just collect resources, travel, collect resources, travel...

There's not much to do here. It's a good framework to be used for a sequel where they make an actual game that is very fleshed out, but right now it just seems like a really big tech demo.

This is an indie game made by only 15 people so Im not going to knock it. Its not a big AAA title like GTA that has up to 300 people working on it for 5 years, but there needs to be a LOT more to do to hold my attention for 30+ hours.

    • Also there is really just a set amount of planet types. Its not limitless at all. And the fact that youre doing the same thing on each one...CygnusZero4
    • ... im really looking forward to the sequel now that they have the foundation built. Needs to be tons of more mission types.CygnusZero4
    • Right now its like a really big version of Mass Effect with significantly less to actually do in it. Very big, not much depth to it.CygnusZero4
    • This is exactly what I feared. And I dunno why anyone else doesn't think it was going to like this from day one.dopepope
    • I hear 'limitless universe' and I hear randomly generated from preexisting set of variables. Everything is basically the same, maybe dif color.dopepope
    • Sounds fun to me and should never have been hyped to be more than a fun indie game like journey.inteliboy
    • Well the planets arent just palette swaps, but they are definitely limited in what youre going to see. Limited amounts of wild life types.CygnusZero4
    • The foundation is very cool, but there needs to be a LOT more of everything. Planet types, creatures, missions, secrets...CygnusZero4
    • you feeling okay CygnusZer04? unlike you to give a reasonable review? :-)Bluejam
    • I don't think they intend to do a sequel, just build upon this massive canvas of a universe that they have created.Bluejam
    • "This universe we’ve built is a pretty large canvas, we’ve got a lot of ideas. "
      Sean
      Bluejam
    • weird, it seems like you ignored all the stuff elahon enjoyed about the game, from interacting with locals, trading, etcmonospaced
    • Of course theyre going to make a sequel.CygnusZero4
    • Agreed all around Cygnus, was really cool for about 15 hours, now is kind of underwhelmingterry_cloth
    • Also, agreed about the mass effect commentterry_cloth
  • CygnusZero4-2

I dont think anyone thinks the game is actually BAD, just severely lacking in content. 10 hours seems to be about the limit of fun in this game. By then you'll likely have been to at least 2 planets, and will have seen everything in the game, except for the center of the universe obviously.

There needs to be way more of everything. Not more planets, but more to do, more planet variety, more missions, more creatures, more secrets. There's not nearly enough of this stuff right now.

Also, they kinda lied about what this game is. They originally made it sound like it was an MMO, which would be cool, to visit other peoples planets and whatnot, but you will never see another person in this game. They never made that crystal clear. They danced around that fact knowing that people wanted it to be this huge MMO, but couldnt deliver it.

    • wait, so you won't run into other players playing live? weeaaaakmonospaced
    • Armchair game developer bullshit yet again.face_melter
    • why does it matter that you don't run into people? I thought that was pretty obvious from the beginning since the game is so vast.OP31
    • I would prefer building bases rather than having it multiplayer, i'm full of ressources and so is my ship and I would like to drop them somewhereelektro
    • it matters ... it makes the universe feel real if it's with other people doing things humans would do, not just a bunch of aimonospaced
    • yep - surely it will have multiplayer no? I thought that was it's appeal as well. although the amount of planets in it would you ever bump into anyone?fadein11
    • Wow - I just explained the Fermi paradox.fadein11

No Mans Sky has a 4.9 userscore on metacritic lol. People realizing its just a collect-a-thon. Go somewhere, collect resources, go somewhere else, collect resources. Repeat for 40 hours when you arrive at the center of the universe, and thats it.

  • section_0142

This video talks about the procedural generation. The creatures, in particular, are likely to be different from planet to planet. But, per planet, won't be as varied.

Still on the fence about this game. I think the "what the hell do you do?" part is scaring people off. Cygnus' review doesn't inspire me to pick it up unfortunately.

    • Cygnus probably hasn't even played the gameernexbcn

@CygnusZero4 so, you have been playing the PC game that comes out tomorrow? cool story bro.

Just played an hour or so of no mans sky over at my bros - it's damn incredible. For fucks sake gamers are spoilt these days if this is considered a disappointment.

When I was a kid I thought this was the bees knees:

  • detritus1

So, face_melter, bluejam and others - how is it?

    • three days on, i mean.detritus
    • The language learning and crafting aspect of the game are rewarding, the whole game starts to feel like a slow grind after not very long though. If you can liveterry_cloth
    • With that then most of the other detractors are minor in comparison.terry_cloth

No Mans Sky so far, has been getting better the more I've established the time of game it is, which is exploration and survival. It is literally a universe which is an incredible achievement when you see there has been no laziness in the attention of detail, It's obviously still a work in progress which will keep getting improvements. I started out by declining the atlas, which really does isolate you, I eventually found cordinates to my original crash site an retrieved it. I think next step should be more fluent movment for those npc's like seeing them emerge from space crafts ffs lol

    • played 7 hours w/o checking things, got angry why i wasn't be able to get into a space station, died after falling off from a cliff.sted
    • said fuckit started a new game, accepted the atlas, now I know what it's for :)sted
  • face_melter2

    @detritus

I think it is awesome, in the proper sense of the word. It has totally clicked with me - the wandering, the exploring, the scanning, and selling knick-knacks for petrol money.

I think I am only about two systems in, but I have been absolutely engrossed in it so time kind of flits by. After about eight planets full of EVERYTHING trying to kill me - I eventually found one which was perfect - sunny, with no bastard weather or radiation that tries to melt my skin and full of building-sized mineral deposits. Spent God-knows how long just buggering about mining things and looking for settlements. Then I remembered I had a game to play, made a few warp cells then jetted to the next system.

It's not to everyone's taste - especially if you're expecting some kind of whizz-bang explosion simulator or a space MMO. It is the kind of game where you make your own narrative - you point your ship in a direction and just... go.

I would recommend to try before you buy because you will definitely know within the first hour or so if you want to continue or not. For me, personally, it is the game I always thought it would be and the game I always wanted it to be - the more I play it, the more I want to play it.

    • Do you feel like you're playing game or is it immersive? Visually it looks almost cartoony from the screenshots I've seen (math generated color palettes).SteveJobs
    • I'd want sparse lifeforms be it flora or fauna. Finding life of any kind should be an achievement and a huge part of the satisfaction of discovery.SteveJobs
    • Most of all I'd want very realistic settings, planets like those from Interstellar. With the exploration giving feelings of complete loneliness and isolation.SteveJobs
    • ^ this isn't for you then - this is a 1960's space adventure in glorious technicolour - Robinson Crusoe on Mars meets Battlestar Galactica.face_melter
    • You should probably hold out for Star Citizen (if/when it arrives), that seems to be more like the the game you describe.face_melter
    • I lean toward what SteveJobs is describing. There's too much about NMS that seems visually corny for me, and I've never played it.monospaced
    • Horses for courses - I find 'realistic' visuals, such as Star Citizen's, utterly banal and anemic.face_melter
    • strange that you can't interact with aliens if the exosuit inventory is fullsted
    • ^ yeah, maybe an intentional design workaround because if your inventory is full new items disappear - minerals etc.face_melter
    • Like, when you are mining and your suit is full, you can still mine but the elements disappear.face_melter
  • MrT2

^ I'm a couple of days into NMS too and I say as someone swept along by all the hype and having felt like I've waited years to play, it's brilliant.

The thrill/sense of discovery of a new planet almost feels like a new genre. The procedural nature of the universe is an easy target but I've played in plenty consciously-designed worlds that are much less interesting or exciting.

The gunfights (land and space) are good fun but of course there's been better individual versions of these.

As a massive fan of Elite in the Model B days, this feels like a spiritual successor.

    I love it.

    • * plenty of.
      It's Monday.

    • And re the cartoon-ish look, totally immersive for me, like The Witness.MrT

My friends say the game (NMS) has crashed to them at least 30 times which is ridiculous (on PS4), I'll get it once they sort the bugs out...

    • hasn't crashed onceinteliboy
    • (on ps4)inteliboy
    • Crashed about 5 times for me, They need to fix this. I like to walk around a lot and sometimes can't save during long periodselektro
    • Not crashed for me, also not come across any bugs yet, which in itself is pretty incredible considering the scale. Enjoying this game so far.Bullitt
    • crashed a few times, then crashed upon loading from first crash. after that was fine. that has happened a few times.cruddlebub
  • WhiteFace2

I'm loving NMS, it's still early days for it too, looking forward to seeing what they do with the universe down the line.

  • drgs0

So, all aliens are four legged and one tailed creatures

    • nopested
    • Nah, there are all kinds of aliens - red, blue, and green star systems produce different flora and fauna. I've had bugs, blobs, and flying snakes.face_melter
    • I discovered one that had 12 snake-like legs and wobbled/slithered around.elahon
