Whatever happened to virtual reality? I want sunglasses that do that and that overlay google maps when I'm walking around a new city. I would fucking buy that in an instant. That's innovation - not a laptop minus a keyboard.

That would be augmented reality. Regular computers are already virtual reality

there was some kind of transparent screen computer... soon they will be using that technology in cars I would think
- HUDs have been around since before Top Gun. But I see your point.monospaced
- yes they have but they are just starting to be better qualityEtype

First of all, moth, nobody knows anything concrete about the device. Evidence and rumours point to a thin, 10 inch (or smaller) device as thin as or thinner than an iPhone. That's pretty mobile, in my opinion, and it would slip nicely into most small bags.
To answer your question about what I would bring away for a weekend, I would bring the tablet. There's no need to bring an entire laptop when I don't intend to work. Having more to work with than an iPhone is the point of this. I don't believe it's intended to compete with laptops at all.
- I'm talking tablets in general really.moth
- That's weird. This thread is about Apple's upcoming device and that's what everyone else is talking about.monospaced

- stupid as a laptop to me... but its interesting to see how it will be used with other thingsEtype
- it would suck for most computing unless you were against a static, plain backdropbaseline_shift
- the video tells me otherwisemonospaced

No ukit.
I'm talking virtual reality. I want to play Elite again in a fully immersive, 360 3d world. Porn industry would be all over that. It would fucking rule! Imagine movies where you could walk around the events - computer games... Game sprites are already 3D - it's not a gaint leap to do this....- you should give Michael Arrington a call...i think he's looking for a new project ;)exador1

What I think would be interesting is that because of the rich user experience and (presumably) closed format, it could open up a whole new market for apps similar to the iPhone.
Like it says in the article, news sites could offer access to constantly updating content for a subscription. And actually anyone with a popular blog or content based site could sell an app or access to premium content of some kind.
- yep...Apple usually has an industry changing idea with these kinds of thingsmonospaced
- There's also potential for some pretty cool games obviously...ukit
- I like the idea of mobile television as well.monospaced

I think what Apple is shooting for (based on the WSJ article) is not just a run of the mill tablet, but a cross between a tablet, iPhone and Kindle.

- That's what I meant when I said I didn't think these were meant to compete with laptops.monospaced

I think in an age where content is becoming king, journalism could be saved by good ol fashioned reporting and copyrights protecting that content. And for designers just another medium we'll take advantage of. And if apple has any decency at all they will create less waste than their original ipod versions. If this is to replace a newspaper at least don't make it replaceable in 2 months because it fell off the kitchen table. Just my 2 cents.

Ah but see, journalism will never be saved by that. No one is going to pay for access to "premium content" on a regular website. It's been tried and failed by many sites including NYT. It has been a success for WSJ but that's pretty much it. In general, we've been conditioned to expect editorial content on webpages for free.
On the other hand, on a specialized device like this, it seems reasonable to pay for a subscription of some kind. Especially if the user experience could be enhanced beyond what just looking a regular webpage through a touch screen interface. Theoretically, you'd hope any applications would be able to "hook" into the device's functionality like iPhone apps and take advantage of Apple's UI and animation capabilities.
- You work for Apple, don't you?monospaced
- No, and maybe the Apple device will suck, I'm just saying something like this is inevitable I thinkukit
- OK fine, I'm actually Steve Jobsukit
- I was just pointing out that I believe you are thinking exactly like them. I agree with you.monospaced
- The funny thing is Apple is the only company really well positioned to do something like thisukit
- agree. there needs to be a new interactive content format. web + touch is not enough.scenek

"The funny thing is Apple is the only company really well positioned to do something like this."
Scary but true. I'd like to think that other companies are positioned to compete, but I just don't see it happening. I'm not sure if it's about hiring the right people, or having the right divisions (software, hardware, etc), or just the right vision. It can't all be about money, otherwise Microsoft would have done this already.
- It's b/c of branding and designukit
- How does design and branding make them the only ones well positioned to pull this off?monospaced
- they have media backinglukus_W
- They've created a reputation based around it, so there is a loyal following willing to snap up any new deviceukit
- I guess another thing would be the success of iPhone so it's easy to imagine the same model on a slightly larger scaleukit
- its because of the apple community... people will buy it just because its apple. You dont hear people saying that about microsoft productsEtype

As all of the hosted-solutions / cloud stuff really starts to take off. I think that we'll need a decent way to interface with the stuff that's being hosted elsewhere. I figure a tablet is ideal because it has the potential to be very very minimal (just a screen), but there's also the possibility of using it with traditional input devices.
Potentially the tablets could have a docking system, allowing them to be used as a regular computer (kb/mouse) and then picked up and taken to a meeting to make notes.
Even just being able to use them for sketching, painting would be good for illustrators / designers. Those Wacom screen / tablets are pretty great - I don't see why these couldn't fulfil the same type of purpose one day.
I currently can't think of any good replacement for a pad of paper and pen.
I've lot count of the number of times I've had a PDF I need to read at the same time as working .. or I've wanted to read something away from my desk. Even bringing a netbook along is a hassle because there's a keyboard & hinge that gets in the way.
When I cook, I generally use recipes found on sites like epicurious. I have to either print my recipe, or risk getting shite in the keys on my netbook. I reckon a tablet would be useful here too.
Ebook readers are all very well - but they buck the trend of convergence. It makes no sense to have a device that only does one thing these days.
Then there's all the hype about augmented reality. I reckon, if a tablet has a decent CPU and graphics.. the hype might pay off.

God the fanboys are gonna have to carry so much shit around soon

I want it to run linux.

@version3
I think everyone is aware that tablets do exist already, but everyone's just hoping that apple makes one that isn't ugly as sin, and does something the other ones don't.
