I'm really tired of seeing this same light effect everywhere. (star trek) Its just a quicktime movie you can put it on top of anything and make it look "cool" get we move on? also the 3d info type in space?? cmon.. we are 2 weeks away from 2010!

"Its just a quicktime movie you can put it on top of anything and make it look "cool" "
Not true. If its in-camera, than its in-camera, and it's a natural occurence. If post, that kind of flaring is actually tricky to create. There is some off the shelf capability with Knoll products and Magic Bullet, but you really have to tweak it extensively.
Star Trek, btw, almost all flaring was in-camera due to how the sets were lit.
- That Ronin piece is awesome, incidentally, and thanks for posting it.harlequino

I love flare, and to incorporate it in camera to coincide with effects being added in post takes some planning.

i have the exact same quicktime this guy is using. it def not in camera. I dont know how other people are creating this effect but the result is exactly the same. just sayin!

So you're upset that a post house may have saved themselves some time and expense by (possibly) using some stock to bump up some vfx for the client?
- fyoucher10
I like it and think it's safe to say its a classic effect. If it works without doing anything negative to the composition then its good and it works. Yeah, us "designers" see this stuff a lot but the audience for whom this movie was made for probably have no idea what you're talking about. In the end, it does what it's supposed to do and does it well. I think his work kicks serious ass btw.

No. i'm not upset at people making money. i'm just saying as a visual creators, we should be aware of what we are doing. its really easy (in my mind) to do this effect and rely on the same technique over and over again.

Was it worth publicising the guy via a thread here if you think he's a lazy arse who doesn't deserve to be getting work and exposure?
- EKUL0
i really like this guys work. just sad to see him fall into this trick.
- harlequino0
The fact that you are calling out Rob Chiu and you think he "should be aware of what [he's] doing" is really strange.
- whats so strange? I'm just saying people ar ODing on this light.EKUL
- "People" aren't. You are. You have an aesthetic beef with it. Others like it. Clients like it.harlequino
- It's also strange that you're calling someone out for using some stock footage basically. You created a thread to do so.harlequino
- And you've missed the irony of complaing about lens flare in 2010, after pointing out that it's 2010.harlequino
- I don't mean to be on your case or anything, it's just all kind of silly, see?harlequino
- yea. after all you said, its sillyEKUL

It's too bad you didn't have a portfolio of work that we could critique every trendy or commonplace stylistic tendency that you've used in your professional work.
But then that begs the question, since you're so scathing of this mans work (which is quite awesome I might add), that we should assume you have never used a single preconceived item of artwork or design and have created everything in your personal and professional career from scratch and as complete and utter 'originals'?
hmm....
- dont take it so personal brah... u missing the pointEKUL

If the VFX are appropriate for and support the content, then why not?
Whether to shoot video/film, add grain, add flares, etc. are things that all directors play with to alter the style of their movie. Spielberg loves film grain, Michael Mann loves lens flares!

I really like this piece too. It accurately represents the the emotion and product that the client wanted, as well as being visually appealing.
It does contain trendy "effects": Blown out highlights, lens flares, and MK12 style tracked infographics (which I would think would get more criticized for overuse), but so does a lot of design. Design is trends, that's how it works. This piece is done well, and is appropriate for it's time/client. Will it be so in 10 years? Not likely, but that goes for most things.

ma bad to all the ronin fans out there. but cmon. the light is just slapped on there. there is no light source nor the colors are even feel right. if you disagree you disagree. to me, this is like the ink drip on everything few years back. yea. go ahead. put lens flare on everything.

EKUL, I don't think anyone is really disagreeing that this runs the risk of becoming very overused very fast. But your choice of piece to reference and artist to call out is on the odd side. This is a really neat video, and Ronin is pretty top shelf.
That said, had you called out something that was very amateur and had stock flares slapped on it, then yes, we can all tear it apart and have a laugh.
But you also have to take reality and client direction into consideration. Many clients demand things that may put a strain on artistic sensibilites and budgets. You will often find yourself in situations where, dammit, you just have to slap the effect on there and call it done.
- But, if it's not your cup of tea, and it bugs you, then that's your taste, and that's fair.harlequino
- i think your point is that, if this was an amateur video we can laugh about it but since its mr "top shelf" we should STFU?EKUL
- Not entirely. If I thought it was a lousy piece I'd say so. It's just that this is so well done, it strikes me as an odd target.harlequino
- its QBN. we can talk about it. dont be scared. no one is going to end your career cuz you talked smach about the almighty roninEKUL
- almighty RONINEKUL
- That isn't even remotely my concern or point.harlequino
- I appreciate your argument. thxEKUL

i totally agree with you harlequino. perhapse it was a bad decision targeting ronin but like you said this guy is top shelf and for more 2 years i been seeing this light over and over again. i was just shocked to see a "top shelf" guy resort to something like this. its easy to blame the client factor but you have to remember, we are the creators. its too bad.. its nicely shot.
