hey has anyone had laser eye surgery? like lasik or PRK?
i've heard heaps of rave reviews, people say "just do it" but i haven't really heard of anyone who sits in front of a computer all day...

my step dad got Lasik, he absolutely loved it and now convinced my mother as well cause she is pretty much almost legally blind without her contacts.

my cousin got it, in front of monitor all day. loves it. no complaints.

had it and don't regret it. I used to have really bad astigmatism and had to wear fairly thick lenses.
only semi-complaint is if my eyes are really dry from wind / smoky areas it tends to get blurry. but i suppose others get it too and i already had a history of dry eyes.

My mom got it and loves it.
Keep in mind, its a reset, not a total fix. My mom was in her 40s when she got it about 8 or 10 years ago. She needs reading glasses now, as her eyes have slowly progressed as she hits her early 50s. They are still much better than they were before the surgery, but are getting a bit worse.

Each case is a case. Check with your ophthalmologist, not in a forum.

Mr. Mayo got it and loves it. Had his eyes cut so that a monitor will always be clear for him. He's starting to need reading glasses now but his monitor is still clear.

i'm thinking about getting this soon, going in for a consultation in a couple of weeks.

The number of successful surgeries doesn't change the odds of complications. And while as one doctor told me that you're more likely to suffer eye damage from contacts than laser eye surgery over time, for me its more the danger of the outcome of complications. As a designer, if I have halos or some other weirdness happen, then my career is all but fucked.

I would love to get it but i'm concerned about the long term results.

FYI.
Long term studies have never been done with laser eye surgeries. That should tell you something.
It should also tell you something when the doctor brags about doing 45,000 lasik surgeries.
- like someone said above, 10 years down the road you could need it againFredMcWoozy

Is it possible to improve my vision using this technique even if I already have 20/20?
- Not the eyes, but you can have 50% off in a breast fix with the same coupon.Corvo2
- my mom had 15/15 for a couple months after the surgerybaseline_shift

My ex did it about 6 years ago and she hasn't had any problems.
She been quite satisfied. The whole experience wasn't much of a big deal.

how bad is your vision, mister?

My uncle got the surgery in 1983 and loves it to this day. He's been part of a study for nearly 30 years with hundreds of other early adopters. His eyes have not gotten worse. To claim that there are no long-term studies is ridiculous.
As of now there are no known long-term side-effects except for the fact that yes, the surgery is a "reset" and your eyes may still change post procedure.
I inquired about the surgery myself since I've been wearing contacts for almost 15 years and would love to not need them anymore. When I asked my eye doctor if I should do it, he lowered his glasses, looked me in the eye and said, "I'm still wearing these. That should tell you something."
- lol, wow. So is that the consensus with eye doctors?baseline_shift
- I wonder if its about the actual eye health, or about keeping his list of paying patients long.baseline_shift
- in all fairness... nobody trusts a doctor without glasses on.lambsy
- My optician said much the same to me a few years, she knew no opthalmic professionals who'd had their own eyes done.comicsans

corvo, my eyes are -3.5 and -4, and of course i've been consulting my opthamologist and my regular eye doctor. both say "go for it" as do pretty well everyone i've talked to....
the reason i ask in a forum is because i want to hear from other designers and such - our careers rely on our eyes and i bet we're more sensitive than others to what changes may occur in our eyes after said surgery... that others may notice.
basically just tryin' to get as much info as possible before i make a choice.

Glasses are cool. They offer you one more option for accessorizing.

I know a handful of people who had it done and all have had to start wearing weak glasses a couple of years later because it didn't stick.
