Why in the hell won't my Epson printer print only using Black ink, when I specify to print the document in BLACK? The magenta is out, so it's not going to print, but if I say print black, and the black ink is full, wouldn't it do exactly as I say and not fucking keep telling me the magenta is out?
Damnit, this is giving me a colossal headache.

Another thing that pisses me off is that all my colored ink is terribly low, and I can't remember the last time I printed much color stuff.
I have always had a hunch that, unless you select that a document needs to print in Black, that it uses all the colored ink to create black color. Anyone know anything about this? My black cartridge is almost totally full, which is messed up... it should be the only one that needs replacing.

every printer I've ever owned has been prone to problems and a general pain in the ass. Printers suck.
Of course I generally buy the $80 crap ones... next time I'll try getting a super duper deluxe huge thing that's self aware and can make you dinner and walk your dog. It will probably break down in a week.

They make most of their money from the ink's rather than the printers. I believe kodak is coming with some new longer lasting ink cartridges but it's all still ridiculous.

Are you using illustrator? Do you have the option set to print rich blacks? If so change the setting to 100k blacks.

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago too, mg33.
No solution for you.. it's a massive pain in the ass.
You have my sympathy.

Most inkjet printers have a software option for Black Ink Only that needs to be set every time you print. But even if you do, a lot of those printers use a tiny bit of color as cleaning or lubricating before hand.
I've found HP to be better than Epson for this. On some HPs, you can actually replace the color tanks with a second black tank. I had one that I used for two years without ever replacing the color.
But then it broke down. Cheap crap. Now I have a Black only laser for such printing. Way more efficient for documents.

give away the razor - sell razor blades for life
Its 2 things IMHO
One is selling ink - ink per gallon is some of the most expensive stuff we buy - every. 8000$per gallon http://www.popsci.com/gear-gadge…two is the way the printer is programmed to behave, the cartridges are quite precise pieces of machinery, and need to be cleaned and used every once in a while to stop clogging. - the amount the printer may OVERdo this, is probably related to point #1
had an Epson R1800 - beautiful stuff, angry every time I had to go do sam flax for more ink. Which was almost once a week for a bit - 'here comes the ink man'
Epson was recently slapped a class action lawsuit because of their practices with inks. The printers wasting ink, and reporting empty cartridges when not actually empty.

Epson doesn't want you to print that thing until you buy more ink from them. Simple as that. If they let you print with just black, this one time, they'd have to do that for everybody. Pretty soon people would just be printing any old way, any old time, when they felt like it. Epson would lose the upper hand.
You've got to see it from their point of view, you know? It's not really about the printing--it's about keeping the upper hand.

Set it to print in grayscale.

I've been through this with an epson too, twas very very annoying.... not sure if setting to to print in grayscale works? Don't have the damn thing anymore so I can't try it.

go to a shop and buy a cheap laser printer NOW. Since I have done so (instead of buying a ridiculously expensive set of new ink which would have been about the same price as the laser printer) I had not had any problems. Every half a year I replace the toner cartridge. Done. Plus, I am working a lot with type and laser printouts are better suited for that purpose. And this thing is faster and relieable as fuck...
- i agree. switched to laser and have no more headaches... except cant print in colour.ross

unless you do a crazy amount of color printing, i'd just buy a black & white laser printer, and print all your color shit at Kinkos or similar and let them deal with the pain of color cartridges
