"We're still groping around in the flotsam and jetsam of the last century" - nice!
You can blame the system! the radio for playing 90's music and the TV for showing 90's sit coms. It's holding us back damn it!

Well, yeah, and there hasn't been anything happening so large that it's created an art/philosophy movement. I mean, look WW1 and the nihilism and horror and technology that came out of it created movements in art, literature, philosophy, politics, music..etc. that all went on to define the parameters of the rest of that century. All the major themes of last century came out of that global experience. We just haven't had that yet - so far. But something will happen. Always does. 9/11 and this global economic crisis is more 20th century than 21st in it's shape and origins, but something is coming. War? Environmental collapse? Artificial intelligence? Genetic
Not trying to make this political at all, just saying that the art created in the 20th century really reflected the events that happened that were unique to it - mass industrialized warfare, mass communications, cheap, fast global travel etc, that didn't exist in the 19th century. I don't think we've had any of those severe cultural dislocations yet that would differentiate the 20th century experience from whatever the 21st will be, so we're still mucking about in the old themes. I think everyone old enough to be posting on this forum today will within ten years time feel a serious dislocation with reality due to whatever is coming down the pike.
- let's start a war then. a really big one!mydo

This quote from Fight club may help you...
We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off...

TIMELINE OF CREATION:
16.4 billion years ago, the Cellular Conscience Cycle begins. The big bang, our solar system, 250 million years of meteor bombardment. Action / reaction is formed.
820 million years ago, the Mammalian Conscience Cycle begins, everything is still underwater. 315 MYA, life walks on land, pre triassic extinction happens. Stimulus response is born.
41 million years ago, the Familial Conscience Cycle begins. Monkeys, color vision installed in mammals. As well stimulus individual response.
2 million years ago, the Tribal Conscience Cycle begins. 800,000 years ago the discovery of fire is set in. The ice age happens, similarities and differences are distinguished.
100,000 years ago, is when the Cultural conscience Cycle (agriculture) started. The consciousness of art and the future took presence, where art became a form of communication.
30,000 years ago the Neanderthal went extinct because they couldn't adapt and predict a future, while Reasons began taking effect, with still no right or wrong.
3115 BC (Adam and Eve) Right and wrong are determined in the National Conscience Cycle. It's when we learn to read and write. Jesus dies, religion starts, Rome falls, Law is now set in.
1755 AD The Planetary Conscience Cycle begins, along with the industrial revolution, E.=mc2, hubble, and the internet. Power rules.
1999 The Galactic Conscience Cycle begins, starting with Y2K. And the idea that our civilization as we know it could shut off at a moments notice and we would be at the mercy of our own technology. Ethics speaks up, not who's right, but what's right.
2011 The Universal Conscience Cycle begins. The pathway to co-creation. A new charge of energy.

what's your're problem with people networking and communicating easily with multiple friends? too many photographers? photography must hold some whimsical sentiment in your mind/heart somewhere. why one person enjoys documenting images and others can't is a strange take on life. my gf recently moved back to HK and we were talking the otherday when she told me that people there walk around with large SLR/DSLR rigs as if they are fashion accessories. this is fine with me.
if all this blogging networking documenting of the world around us continues it would be nice to see the people self reporting similar to what we wave seen in the last few months with situations overseas and in third world countries

Fret not. We've not had a cataclysmic event for quite some time, one's bound to come along and change everything sooner or later. I predict nuclear strikes in the next five years. Then we'll not have to do design, just shovel bodies and body parts into mass graves while scratching our purple spotted skin and poking our bloody gums.

You are all just growing up and getting existential, that's all. Do your own thing and you will be fine.

All I knew. all I believe.
Crumbling images no longer comfort me.
Scramble to reach higher ground.
Order and sanity something to comfort me.Take what is mine. horde what is mine.
Suffocate what is mine. bury whats mine.
Soon the water will come and claim what is mine.
I must leave it behind and climb to a new place now. This ground is not the rock I thought it would be.
Thought I was high. thought I was free.
That I was there. divine destiny.
I was wrong. this changes everything.Running away, got me running away.
Now Im running away.I will take what is mine. horde what is mine.
Suffocate what is mine. bury whats mine.
Soon the water will come and claim what is mine.
I must leave it behind and climb to a new place.Water rising up on me.
Said that water rising up on me.
Thought the sun would come deliver me.
But the truth has come to punish me instead.Die..
Ground break down right under me.
Cleanse and purge me in the water.
