Socialism rocks. I love facebook.

The same, handle, could be said of capitalism. In theory it works great; the best and brightest get the money, those who don't get the money strive to be the best and the brightest, all of which fosters innovation and excellence. But much like your assessment of socialism in the real world, the mechanisms are hindered by human nature. In your example it was laziness. In capitalism, it's greed.
So, in reality, the best and the brightest only get the money if the most conniving and ruthless allow them to. Deals are made based on relationships and strategy rather than quality and merit. Those who have more money have the ability to change the way the system works, through lobbying, bribes, etc. This gives those with money power, and the power to make more money. Those without see that, in many cases, it's who you know, who you are related to and/or dumb luck that gets you wealth. And if they don't know or aren't related to anyone with money, even their best efforts will be left up to chance as to whether they succeed.
Socialism can work, but what it requires is for people to break out of the survival of the fittest mindset. The main construct of socialism is the community. People have to realize and accept that their cooperation is integral to the success of the whole society in that system. People also have to learn to find satisfaction in contributing efforts to that end, rather than measuring personal progress by how much one has monetarily and materialistically.
In other words, it's not going to happen without some sort of major catalyst to make it happen. Those who have the power to change the way things are, have no desire to, because the way things are benefits them.
And let's not delude ourselves into thinking that in socialism there'll be no avarice and in capitalism there'll be no sloth. Any societal system will be at the mercy of the worst parts of humanity to some degree. It's a matter of how those parts are dealt with within the system that determines whether they will take the system down with them or not.
So here we are, neither system works without suffering of some kind by some portion of the populace. So then, it can become a question of morality; most likely fail while trying to promote a system where mutual support is promoted, people who have less are still cared for and allowed to retain their humanity, or most likely fail while supporting a system where there are winners and losers and whistle past the graveyard thinking you'll never be on the losing end and believing in some puritanical way that if you do fail, you deserved it.

Thank god for nazi healthcare,

U.S. ranks last in quality of health care system
The top-performing country trounced the U.S. despite spending less than half as much per person on health care.
