I dont believe it is about commercial viability. It has to do be the notion of being clever.
When I saw Eric's work it reminded me of Tobias Wong's work. Much like Tobias's work, there was a theme, but it was not original. It was rather a using an original work to obtain his originality. The body of work is very nicely done but what is the actual design or new idea.
I do note that as francoisfido's thought that being clever is good but with originality is something different.
When I see the work, I think its clever but I think without originality.
- these are some really important things. If only he was original the world would be a better placePupsipu
- big difference btw tobias wong's work and Eric's in my opinion. Tobias' work has a much more well though out storiesjunetic

- there are such things as original ideas that dont seem like ripped off images from iStockPhotosjunetic
- That is true. I do agree that there is a strong story behind his work. But when I talk to him, he doesnt seem to have one.MrDinky
- Just like his first work, which got him noted, when asked, he said, he just wanted to see what happens.MrDinky
- Telling a story in words and Design that has gone through a thoughtful process can be two different things i guessjunetic
- Thats the thing, when he did the starck chair, there was no process. Just wanted to stick a bulb in thereMrDinky

" this man should be very employable for his ability to conceptualize interesting ideas and also to execute them in appropriate ways"
What is the concept?
- Tyler0
The concept is redefining everyday things using design.
I've seen a million traditional student portfolio's with the annual reports and faux identities. Its nice to see someone with a cohesive body of work that to me absolutely displays good design and typography skills, and has a bit of thought behind it.
Plus, he custom made his own 50lb portfolio case, you can't fuck with that.

"The concept is redefining everyday things using design."
I dont see the everyday thing as the concept. It was more in exercise in being clever while causing provocation. The everyday item was a mere vehicle which had no real bearing to the over all concept.

now here's a concept:
- MrDinky0
But I will agree that he does differentiate from other grads.
I see his notion of concept being well played in marketing or advertising arena.

mmmhh....
I feel like nowdays there are 2 main type of works :
-eyecandy. photoshop, montage which usually ends with a naked girl picture mixed with some colorfull glows.
Some are truly amazing, while most works just look like cheap meaningless copies.-minimalism. it's all about a supposed brilliant idea or concept which usually ends with a 2lines font layout helvetica/akkurat kerned. Some are truly amazing, while most works just look like cheap meaningless copies.
