The trouble here is that people are always looking to justify visual works with words, when in fact those are two separate worlds. That is why I think that chair is actually very achieved and a good example of this dilemma.
- if the work was formally interesting to begin with you might have a point. but in this case it's all cheap concept...francoisfido
- which may as well be theoretically dissected if anything.francoisfido
- well it's a chair in the end. what makes it formally interesting or not?Corvo2

"Well show us how you would address an interesting subject... oh...wait.. you can't." -d_rek

the issue i have with the work is that he's dealing with heavily cliché'd 'graphic design' subjects like barcodes, chinese takeaway menus, pin-badges, post-no-bills areas, etc... without having a point or taking a strong position in relation to any of it—the work is an exercise in typical marketing gimmickry—formally devoid of any real substance."don't you think the chair is something achieved?"
–
formally it's the most accomplished work out of the lot, but here he's taken a 45 year old idea from conceptual art and again made a gimmick out of it. what does a chair which can be disassembled to form the letters in the word 'chair' do more than what Kosuth's work has already done? there is nothing left but a cheap trick which devalues the content of the original work.- artistMau
- had no idea that the chair was done before. Even so, the kid's just out of college. Pure originality is very hard to achieve.Corvo2
- achieve. Doesn't seem like a bad start to me.Corvo2
- in theory francois has solid arguments. in reality the world is fucked up anyway.Coffeemaker
- also, most of literature and philosophy are about "cheap tricks". Figures de Style.Corvo2
- that's bullshit.francoisfido
- it is?Corvo2
- sounds like bullshit to me. maybe you'd like to elaborate.francoisfido
- I can't. Wittgenstein did it first :PCorvo2
- you're not making sense to me.francoisfido
- point is: are you considering your evaluation principles are not free from linguistic fallacy themselves?Corvo2
- meaning, are you evaluating this work based on the work itself or by a standard idea of what the work should be?Corvo2
- and by "this work" I mean solely the chair.Corvo2

Some very clever things on here and some pretty derivative things as well. The chair project, I've seen it around on some other blogs, is really well thought-out and shows that he is a craftsman.
Unfortunately for me, some of his projects fall flat. HONESTLY, I can't say whether it is for lack of concept/design/application on HIS part - or if it is the fact that I am completely jaded with "clever jerkoffs" like Banksy, Fairey, etc. having worked in the ad industry during the time of "TAKE IT TO THE STREET!" has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
I think his projects, while maybe not completely developed, signal something great in terms of a student portfolio - something I hope to see echoed in more student folios. I WOULD like to see some of his typographic work, his web-work, his lay-outs, etc... but the lack thereof should not disrepute the work that stands. My grievance, if really any with his work, is not in the meaningless and mastabatory relevance of it - but that that same TIME, ENERGY, and THOUGHT could have gone into projects that build a little more value. He just needs to start thinking bigger and he's set.

I want to see Mr. Dinky's portfolio. If its that strong, I'd love to post it...

Well?
- MrDinky0
Sorry tyler, I never claimed to have a good portfolio.
But I promise to show up at one of them pingpong thing next time.

the photography of his work is very nice, the indexexhibit web template is also nice, but honestly I believe everything he has done has already been done before. even the bottled urine is in the marketplace... I think if he can show some more traditional design examples he might be able to get a job, otherwise I give him a B+ for his school efforts. I would have given him an A but he didn't design the website...
- What would you give this?
http://dinoreyes.com…d_rek - my name is all I need to get me work. :)robotron3k
- LOLOLdMullins
- What would you give this?

i can't decide what's worse:

how does it matter if a crit comes from someone with or without a portfolio? why would that change the value of the comment?
the "back it up" attitude is completely ridiculous
- LosRobles0

it's not about backing up words with work,
it's about backing up words with logic.
you know, content + communication?????????
- LosRobles0
Woah, you guys are way too sensitive.
It's not my fault you failed as "creatives".- I am not a creative so I have never failedMrDinky
- Jeez... that explains it all.. the masterful critic ... capable of guiding creatives with the light of wisdom... cunt.d_rek
- MrDinky, any trends we should care to follow or look out for? I'm lacking in originality and ideas these days.d_rek
- 45 degree angles.MrDinky
- dMullins0
I believe having some work to "back up" what you have to say is immensely beneficial to anyone truly giving a shit about what you have to say. Mainly, how can anyone respect YOUR opinion if you can't demonstrate your own understanding of design principles?
Otherwise I guess you're trying talking shit on peoples' work for some QBNlolz.
- minus the "trying"dMullins
- Yes your work is words of godMrDinky
- I'm still trying to figure out if you think you're funny, or coy, or both.dMullins
- I am a complicated manMrDinky
- i'm of the belief that you can learn something from anyone... regardless of thier portfolio's pedigreeidentity
- We would probably be shocked at what we learned from MrDinky. Shocked in a bad way.d_rek
- This is the internet after all.MrDinky

this has all gotten really pithy...
