BOBKAT,
If one doesn't believe in God, then you have to assume, the Bible, Quran etc. all religious books are fictitious. we cannot use any thing those books say in this discussion. I am not even arguing the bible is right or wrong, im not even saying any religion is right or wrong, we are just talking about a creator. I am not trying to disrespect anyones beliefs. When one dismisses an argument without thinking through it with an open mind, they are robbing themselves of the truth. Religious people do this all the time. Because they are so stuck in what they believe or they let their emotions define what they believe, instead of basing their emotions on what they believe. People who don't believe in God sometimes act just like religious people when they don't evaluate from an objective perspective. All I am saying is look at all arguments from a non emotional clear mind and then make a evaluation of what you believe.

I believe religion screws up morality all the time. I love the fact that you brought up your dog. which lines up with what im talking about. Why does an animal like a Dog who has a different brain structure as a human being still categorize acts as "GOOD" or "BAD" acts? the dog has never known religion, I am not talking about WHAT is or Good or bad im just saying the act of SEPARATING and categorizing acts into GOOD and BAD. Why does your Dog and your mind do the something? If for example lets assume in a universe where there is not a higher being or definer of morality. We are all different individual beings, my mind might seperate an act 'A' as a good act but your mind might categorize that act 'B' as a bad act. but we both are categorizing it, why are we doing that... thats what im trying to get us to think about. I followed the rabit hole that there isnt a God and i ended up with question. Why does all living beings that think categorize everything into Good acts and Bad acts, why is there a common need to do that? thats all I am asking you to think about. We dont need a bible or a religion to tell us there is an abosolute common definition of what is Good and Bad its in animals in all people. that to me tells me there is a higher being.
I have always thought christians are hypocrites, all people do that anybody that lies is a hypocrite and i dont know anyone that doesnt lie. or i dont know anyone that isnt a hypocrite , show me someone who says they are not a hypocrite and they are being a hypocrite by saying they arnt one haha...

- We do it because of survival and the evolution of ourselves as a social species. All social animals must do this.monospaced
- And to think I'll end up at "God makes it so" is just insane. I can't argue with you, it's impossible.monospaced

Naygon, Sam Harris says morality comes from the need to not hurt another being, but he needs to go back a step further why is it wrong to hurt another being? where does that idea come from? why is hurting another being wrong? if there is no higher being he wouldnt have the need to define the fact that hurting a being is 'wrong' its just an act thats neither wrong nor right.
- see below, no higher being required.. the more you argue the more of an absolute dumbshit you come off asmonospaced
- That concept of wrong comes from a little something called empathy.cannonball1978

As social species evolved, it became more and more necessary to depend on each other. This includes us and other animals, like dogs, that work and live in groups or packs. The only way a group can succeed is with a hierarchy and an understanding of what and what is not tolerated. Killing your neighbor is bad for not just your neighbor, but for you, as you have just upset the group dynamic. We literally evolved to define good and bad as it pertains to our individual groups. This, in essence, is why different groups have different definitions. At no point was a higher being involved, it's simple and straight sociological facts of social evolution of species. Done.

they believe god put it there and made it older

I think its possible for the earth to be older than 10,000 but still created by a creator.
- < insanity. At what POINT did he create the earth. When the solar system was star dust?monospaced
- We have models for how it was created, and they're accurate, so implying a creator is just... dumbmonospaced
- sure, but that's not the issue. the issue is inventing answers because we don't know.cannonball1978
- although this is a creationist thread.. there are other creation theories besides big bang and the christian's 7 day idea.plash
- Well its kinda impossible for there to not be a higher being/creatorjazzman121
- From a logical perspective... now even scientists can prove that there is a higher being/creator/Godjazzman121
- No, logic does not point to a creator. It does point to a possible higher being in the universe, but not the same thing.monospaced
- Lets see the source on that JazzmanNaygon

"creationism" is such an abstracted politicized narrow pointless discussion in religion and not the point at all about the reality and truth within the best religious views and life styles. Jesus didn't talk about creationism, Buddha didn't talk about creationism, Muhammad didn't talk about creationism Krishna didn't, the only people who do are fundies and 18th C. vatican officials and retards on the internet.
- Lets not forget a large majority of contemporary protestants, they like to harp on it too...NONEIS

The universe has not been created yet. We are all god's dream for the future.

I think lazerbass has it right for the most part. If you investigate the origins and ideas of creationism you'll find them soaked in power and politics.

The universe is an illusion, therefore God is a serial liar

Well, in fairness, the Bible does describe God "creating" everything in pretty specific detail. World in 7 days, Adam and Eve, etc etc.
I don't see a way that the Bible is compatible with evolution if you are intellectually honest about it.
- its no way as literal as some people make it and the bible is only a fraction of the entire religious world anywaylazerbass
- Well, fine, it's in the same league as The Odyssey amd other ancient pieces of literature.ukit
- I promise you, it was taken VERY literally at one point, and you would have been hanged for saying otherwise.NONEIS
- the problem is some do take it literally and they are pushing that on everyone else.October
- if God is God, then, he might not be necessarily bound by time or physicsa_iver
- Nowhere near the same league as the Odyssey. The Bible contains history as well as parables and poetry.Scotch_Roman
- The Odyssey is pure myth.Scotch_Roman
