It's just fun, really. A different feeling from a geared road bike.

Only strong points I can think of maybe:
easier to maintain
less weight
aesthetically look nicer with out all the derailleurs etc.

better in snow

The bikes themselves are fun to ride... the current circus surrounding them and the associated dress code is hilarious. Nowhere in cycling is there such homogeny as in the "fixie" scene.
- .hmmm well 55 year old guys in the burbs or southern california/petaluma and boulder/denver with their wool and spandex outfits/ n lets not forget all the dual suspension mountain bike gear daddies.. i think cycling has the most fashion slaves? oh and then theres the nike live hard /strong whatever mess... agree, just like a schwinn with a kick-back hub or coaster brake, less to worry about, it makes biking fun in chicago when theres a stop sign every ten feetthebigness

it's a trendy thing to do here, all the hipster's parents buy them for their wonderfully absurd children.

- all i hear is complaints and jealousy towards people who ride a bike.. its pathetic.e-pill

Every scene has elements of homogeny. Ever have a look at the "roadie" scene?
- wot he saidthebigness
- +!. looks like eurotrash nascar..loaf
- idiot. thats because roadies are racers 90% of the time. they have sponsors for their teams.iCanHazQBN

I'm still not sold on fixed gears, but I do get single speeds.
I only use the top 2 gears on my bike (and the lower only when I'm feeling lazy) so it would make sense to get rid of most, if not all, of the gears and reduce the weight/complexity of my bike.

Oh, and I guess the 'fun' comes from being able to go fucking fast, running a hazardous braking system, from what I can tell.

awesome cornering, and you get that mad indie cred for not having brakes and lots of scars to show when you flew over the hood of the car that stopped short in front of you.
friend of mine is a fixie geek, i still have a 10 speed; went for a ride in the countryside a while back. he's in way better shape than i, but after about 2 hours, he was done, couldn't keep up with the gears.

over the weekend i took my fixie across the williamsburg bridge, i rode all the up to 153rd street and back, then i continued thru brooklyn for a total of 5 and half hours... i enjoyed every grueling sec and loved every moment of me burning my excess calories...
i like to feel the breeze in my face and enjoy my own time...
i love my bike.
my bike loves me.

I went down and did the NYC Century ride last year on my fix. It was awesome riding 100 miles all over NYC.
Sitting in central park after 12 hours of riding amongst a sea of gear-spandex dudes I felt pretty bad-ass until I noticed the guy with the uni-cycle sitting across from me.
- it took you 12 hours to ride 100 miles???iCanHazQBN
- 8 miles an hour....wow....
join the 19th century alreadyxcarlx - its called mechanical advantage....xcarlx

i bought a single speed for the riding to and from work. it's flat. don't need gears. it's actually a flip-flop. i tried it out fixie and it was fun, for a bit. just something new. it can fuck up your knees after a while i've heard and i'm getting enough knee problems from soccer, so i'll be sticking with the single speed.
- I had a messed up knee and riding the fixed hub actually helped it healbilll

I'm far from trendy but I do have a fixie because it is very simple - no gears means nothing can go wrong, and you do feel more in control.
I rely on my proper geared road bike for long rides/races, however: much faster.

The fixed wheel phenomenon started amongst serious athlete cyclists as a way to build strength and stamina. They had brakes and were not fixed wheel, they just ran a single rear hub so that you had to work hard all the time.
They also looked pretty cool in a retro, stripped down way, so slowly became a fashion accessory.

fixies are so hot right now.

Growing up I raced road bikes and eventually mountain bikes. We rode our fixed gear bikes in winter months only, keeping speeds down and focusing on making circles - proper pedaling technique. In the most classic sense, they're track bikes used in velodromes for insanely fast sprint racing.
Annoyingly trendy now, they do make sense in terms of low maintenance and weight. I bet there's been a huge increase emergency room visits from the unskilled riding of these bikes.
