Growing up I raced road bikes and eventually mountain bikes. We rode our fixed gear bikes in winter months only, keeping speeds down and focusing on making circles - proper pedaling technique. In the most classic sense, they're track bikes used in velodromes for insanely fast sprint racing.
Annoyingly trendy now, they do make sense in terms of low maintenance and weight. I bet there's been a huge increase emergency room visits from the unskilled riding of these bikes.
