I think I'm going to talk to my Psychology teacher about my plans... she's big into Native American culture (she's a PhD, published a couple books on the subject apparently, and frequently lives with the midwestern tribes...) so maybe she can help me locate a tribe in or around Arizona. That way I could get two things done at once– have a place to stay between TX and CA and maybe get to participate in some of their rituals and such. I've heard the sweat lodge is quite an experience...
- they'd love to give you secrets wasichu. if you're interested in a sweat, just look for one near Sedona.jaylarson
- Nah! I used to hang with a local tribe and play music with them as a kid. I heard the western tribes were a little different so I'm curious how their lives/beliefs differ (or if I can even tell).ismith

you forgot:
• adult diaper (x14)
• 2 x bag of lime
• 20 square feet of plastic sheeting (2mm high grade)
• ex-army entrenching tool- Get out of my head!duckofrubber
- Lime... for scurvy?ismith
- lime breaks down the human carcass. ffs, who doesn't know this shite?!?airey
- and it's the mineral lime, not the one you put in a beer - if you like cock that is.airey
- OHHHHHHHHH. Now I understand. The diapers through me off.ismith
- You put them in diapers, throw them in the trunk, then bury them about 14 days later. Gotcha.ismith
- no, the diapers are so you can keep driving across state lines and not stop.airey
- space diapers

Bring a laptop, take as many pics/video as possible. Upload them to your 'puter. You'll be glad you did years from now.

Hit up as many Scenic Byways as possible:

I'm just hearing that my dad knows someone in Glen Rose, about 75mi SW of Dallas. That would mean a hell of a drive from South Carolina (16-18hrs between two people), but also that I would only have to camp/find a hotel for one night, somewhere in Arizona by way of I-10. Or I could find a place in El Paso– anyone recommend? Looking for cheap and en route no matter how dingy...

If you need company you could always pickup hitch hikers, but only if you don't value your life too highly :)

friend of mine did the america loop a couple of years ago, took a year to do it. he's into native american big juju type of places; if you're interested in that, and have a rough route in mind, i can ask him for some power spots to visit.
he also hit me up like 4 times during that trip for money ('i'm stranded in utah, i have no gas, it's starting to snow'), so uh just assume that you'll need way more money than you think.
i know he stayed at a lot of national parks, i guess the camping there is cheap.

i would but i have to pee every 1h30m - its gets annoying on long trips.

also, you may want to line up camping areas beforehand, the cops will definitely shoo you if they find you. plus, there's showers and toilets and whatnot. those also cost money, not much, but it adds up.
lock your shit up good and out of sight, especially if you tote around camera and laptop.
which highway you gonna take, 10, 20, or 40? i've driven through texas, it's deathly boring, flat and nothing to look at but oil derricks and the occasional cattle.

sounds like fun, wish I could do it

Sharon, CT > Feasterville/Philadelphia, PA > Columbia, SC > Los Angeles, CA
±3250mi
Checklist
--------------------
Car + gas (±300 each way)
Food + drinks
Clothes
Sleeping bag + tent + old blankets
Camera + cell phone
Obviously tons of music, books
Atlas
Flashlight/lanterns
Duct tape
Instrument(s)
MAYBE laptop, for if I was to find work in CA
--------------------This is my initial plan. I have friends/family in PA and SC, so those stops add free food, room to sleep, and possibly some work outdoors for a little cash. Probably spend about a week traveling each way, and a few weeks to stay in LA where my aunt has offered her garage.
What I'm still looking for is a wingman... most of my friends are too busy except one who doesn't have a license or much driving exp. which is problematic. Also problematic: since my own car died in January, it's a little unlikely I can use the car I drive now to go beyond SC.
Anyone else try something similar, either as a kid (minor like meee) or an adult? Suggestions for things I have to do? One friend wanted to come and film it as a school project, but he's too busy. One thing I thought might be worth doing is twittering the journey... perhaps making a few stickers and planting them all across the country. Any ideas? I'm very interested in meeting people along the way, at bars/concerts/etc, having fun with some friends, and temporarily displacing myself from my everyday routine.
