So many websites are built with hacks and fixes which are put into action once they detect that IE is being used. To be fair to Microsoft, I think they've been between a rock and a hard place re. all of this. AFAIK if they chose to go purely for standards - a lot of the old sites would appear broken -> standards mode was eventually decided on as the default, but now we have a situation where some sites are appearing to be 'broken'.
Philosophically, the whole notion of free and open-source software is entirely at odds with the model of capitalism that made Microsoft - which seems to be based around the notion that you can produce software as a unit, and sell it as something which has an inherent value. Previously it must have appeared entirely sensible to produce a product which created a market that only Microsoft had access to - it's how they founded their billions.
God knows how a company like that can ever adjust to a new worldview - but then, MS manoeuvred a remarkable turnaround in the late 90's (when Bill Gates told the world that the Internet was an unimportant blip / and that MSN would be where it's at) ... so anything's possible I guess.

IE8 is far, far, better than IE7. Loads pages much faster.
The compatibility mode thing is kind of strange, but it beats a page rendering all wrong and not being able to view it in IE at all. There's some other nice additions to IE8, overall I've found it to alright.

IE8 - IE7 compatibility tag:

"and if microsoft said "fuck em" and went with strict view only? who do you think would be paying for all those revisions to all those gov't websites? not microsoft that's for sure."
Also Microsoft would lose control of that part of the internet, The shitness of IE is about holding idiots who programmed their intranets badly years ago in a vice. As long as they control IE they control a whole bunch of dumb companies and governments
- zarkonite0
so WhiteFace I'm still waiting for that website that's breaking?
- Stugoo0
word on the street is that ie will be dropping thier rendereing engine for the next version of ie

You can turn off compatibility view you know =) In theory it should only turn on when the site asks for it, do you have any sites to demonstrate the problems you're experiencing? I'd like to figure this one out for my own personal knowledge...
- I realise you can turn off the compatability view, but without it, some sites e.g. this one, don't function properly.WhiteFace
- Oh, have you tried the accelerators yet? it's neat, you can just highlight text and wiki or map it or whatever.zarkonite
- but it SHOULD NOT use that unless it's needed, that's why I think the website is at fault here.zarkonite

Microsoft is just a greedy company, like all those super power
corporation.
Why not make one browser for everything, so that we all can express ourselves how we exactly want to and further advance the internet into even great and better things. But no no.... Hold on to those clients and keep it going!
Thanks Capitalism!! yay !

exactly what 7point34 said.
ie like it or not is here for very long time. ie8 with regards to its predecessors is a good browser however all browsers render a little different and each has its own unique gloss i feel.Microsoft seem to finally have it in their few for a standards based internet.
In the next 2 to 3 years we will see less support for ie6 and more in favour of standards compliant browsers, not for what ie6 cannot do but what other browsers can.

Also, what the hell is with the god-awful coloured tabs?! I get that the idea is to connect related pages but surely it could have been execued better than that?
- 7point340
as god awful frustrating as they are you do have to understand that they have been the industry standard for 8 or 9 years now (and that's only counting since people gave up on netscape 4) there are countless websites, intranets and online forms out there that were coded solely for IE, including a fair amount of gov't agencies, financial institutions, etc. if microsoft did not cater to these clients it would lose it's market share completely. while that might sound fucking awesome to all of us. it would be suicide for them, so of course they are going to do everything possible to make sure that their latest and greatest browser can still display all those ancient websites.
and if microsoft said "fuck em" and went with strict view only? who do you think would be paying for all those revisions to all those gov't websites? not microsoft that's for sure.
it's a beast that is slowly losing it's footing, but it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
