Do a lot of you out there do design work for a fulltime job during the day and freelance on the nights/weekends? You make good coin, but it's pretty taxing... any thoughts?

I used to but I go to school at night. So less money but still taxing.

i freelance sometimes outside of work. it's the only chance i have of doing something i don't hate.

I don't do fulltime + freelance, but I have a 60/40 split.
3 days at an in-house gig, 2 days of freelance.
I feel fortunate to report that my freelance work is going well and have a lot of work, but that makes the situation that I'm in more of a 60/60 split.
if you follow that math that would be 120%, which means that I'm always working weekends.
so basically my conclusion is that freelance is taking whether you do it part time or full time. I think it depends on your personality. If you're a workaholic like myself, you'll find yourself working all the time.

- that's a really good setup - It's hard to find a 3day job, but you're doing it exactly how I'm planning/trying tomeatball
- if you get a girlfriend, you'll want to fuck instead of freelancing... I've stopped working weekends!zarkonite
- Dude, if you really love what you are doing you will find yourself working all the time regardless the split...NONEIS

yeah, that's exactly why I do it to...but waking up to do the 9-5 gets in the way of those longer nights.

I did that for a while and my family suffered, my work suffered, and my body suffered.

I'm knee deep into two huge projects for both full-time and for freelance, so I am spent. It helps out, but in reality i would rather enjoy my time at home to do fun stuff. I guess i'm just paying my dues for now to make it all better in the future.

i work 1-2.5 days in house for a local agency. any more than that and i feel like im an employee. any less than that and i have to do more scrambling than i care to.

i go to architecture school full-time and freelance on three huge identity / graphics / interiors projects... i am a hermit.

yeah.. I think the 2-3 day a week inhouse and spending the rest of the week freelancing is the ideal way to go..tough to find a part time design job though, especially in vancouver, just gotta get my shit together more I guess
- How is the freelancing in Van? I'm thinking of moving...zarkonite

zarkonite - honestly, i think the freelancing in vancouver is fine, all the fulltime freelancers I know of have a solid stream of incoming work, i've just been too much of a chicken shit to jump in with both feet, so I'm looking to do a part time gig for a couple of days and freelance the rest of the time. mind you, this is just my opinion. I haven't worked anywhere else, so I can't really compare.

I also have a full time day gig and do lots of freelance at night/weekends. It definitely helps me not only money-wise, but keeps me thinking, and 'creative'. It takes some time geting used to it, but it is not impossible

I'm working full time freelance and then extra freelancing on top at the moment. Fucking tax bill is enourmous for this year because 07-08 is my first full year as a self employed freelancer and the inland revenue have stung me for payments on account which means I've got to pay my tax for 07-08 and on top of that, I have to pay another 50% in advance for the 08-09 year.
I feel like I'm already in a loop where I'm just going to end up working to pay tax bills and never end up with any sort of savings.
