You can't compare the M8 to any DSLR on the market. Rangefinder photography is fundamentally different to SLR and DSLR.

While it is true that shooting a rangefinder camera is fundamentally different than shooting TTL anyone with half a brain wouldn't spend that type of cash on what amounts to a glorified point and shoot.
This camera and Leica as a whole is not much more than a status symbol.

Is it a status symbol. Sure. Are macs status symbols to some people? Sure, but it's also a tool to others.
Everything's a status symbol innit?
This is going to deteriorate into a mac vs pc argument before long.

Leica is a solid camera for film. For digital it is hard compare with nikon or canon.
Also, if you get Leica, ideally to use Leica lens, which can be more or almost the camera lens.

Buying Panasonic digital cameras with Leica badges on is wasting money on worthless status symbols, but true Leica.. proper Leica mechanicals and glass, is praised (and has been praised for so many decades) because of it's quality.
I have a simple 50mm Leica Summarit lens on my digital rangefinder and the quality of images is like nothing I have ever acheived before or seen from even the best quality DSLRs.
Some status symbols get there off the back of proven benefits and advantages, and the finest naturally costs more.

M8 is not panasonic.
It uses Kodak sensor.
27 x 18 mm CCD sensor (Kodak KAF-10500)

^ I was refering to the Lumix range of cameras which are Panasonics with Leica badges on.
Leica doesn't make sensors in the same way that Leica never made film. They make superior lenses and precision mechanicals.

Hence the cheaper price and M8 being higher end. But M8 is still not worth it.
- Horp0
^ How can do you mean "not worth it"?
- JSK0
As a digital camera, it doesnt hold weight vs other digital cameras for is price point. Granted it is RF and it is Leica mechical but Leica IMO is reliable on its mechanical movement.
Digital camera's heart is at its sensor, with out superior sensor, it can not justify the price.

Leica is trying to move more in to casual users. Looking at M8.2 where things are more automatic.

I'd love a Leica film camera, because I think it will always be nice to have a good film camera that gets a particular look to photos that you can't get with digital.

Also, M8's sensor is not fullframe.
Leica M8
27 x 18 mm CCD sensor
Canon 5D mark II
• 36 x 24 mm CMOS sensor

You can switch sensors you know.
I take your point if your point is that you are spending all that money buying all that genuine Leica goodness and then getting a shitty sensor in it, but I have an RD-1 which came with a 6mp sensor by someone (I am not hot on sensors) and I had the sensor switched for the sensor from the M8 (The RD1 was the Cosina-Kobayashi prototype commissioned by Leica for the M8).
So if I can switch up the RD1 surely you could switch up the M8 too. Sensors don't cost hardly anything at all.
