I actually think it's actually quite profound in subtle ways.
It's showing a period which can be seen as a dawn or enlightenment age.... the teenage years of modern society. Arguably much of the worlds problems (rampant commercialism, the vacuous pursuit of money, etc) can be seen as a direct reaction to the work of the advertising industry on Madison Avenue.
The adjustment and change that people in the show are experiencing is used to highlight this social change .. but while this progression could have been shown in quite an overtly allegorical way, the producers have managed to tie everything together with quite a lot of class and subtly.
In that sense the series on a macro-level can almost be seen in the same light as a coming of age / road movie - but with society as the main protagonist.

I really hope that Draper's world comes crashing down around him as the show wraps up. I think that would be phenomenal. Going from a confident, immovable force who could conquer the world both in work and with women to a shattered, worthless person who's opinion means nothing anymore because he didn't adapt with trends and too fragile to love would be a great way to end the show, I think.
Starting to see signs of it already. When he was in the car with Ira's sister's daughter, and she asked "What are you doing," his response was SO awkward and dumbfounded.

for _salisae_;
I freelanced at a LOT of ad agencies and had a very strong rep as a “guy who solves problems”. I worked the bad hours, did the dirty jobs, saved some arses superior to mine and bent over backwards to please my temporary masters. I am happy to say I got paid well and had a lot of respect from my peers. At one point, I was desperate for full-time employment (the details of that desperation, I won’t share here). I was, basically promised permanent work with more-than-one agency and each time I got screwed over. One place I had been at for near 6 months with the promise of a job and I found out they hired a junior. The way I found out was when I turned up for work and she was sitting in my chair and introduced herself. When I fronted the CD about it, he said I had imagined the whole thing. Similar things happened more than once. Art directors taking credit for my work. Brainless copywriters getting paid 3 times my wage and “borrowing” ideas from me. Just the typical fun stuff you see on Mad Men. Yes, hard to put exactly into words, but you should be able to get the gist.
But there have been a few who I would consider mentors (two who strangely can’t even utter eachothers’ name). They can’t be generalised in any sense.
- I have to be discreet. My disguise on QBN is dangerously thin.MrOneHundred

- Well, it is a very small industry where I am, and if I get into specifics, it could get nasty...MrOneHundred
- ...and I have put it behind me, where it belongs.MrOneHundred
- Are you making fun of me?MrOneHundred
- not at all i just felt like i created a risky situation for you._salisae_
- putting it behind you is the best idea. sorry you had such screwy situations :/_salisae_
- That’s alright. I tend to be a little paranoid. I bet others have had it worse.MrOneHundred

And I'm growing to love TV as a format - I think it's far better than film in some cases, because long term viewing allows relationship with the audience to develop overtime. Story arcs can progress slowly and can potentially reward the viewer far more than a 120min feature film. I don't think of TV as a cheap medium these days.

Well I saw it for the first time this evening, and I am not really into period shows from earlier years, just kind of depressing to me. Overall, I was not amazed by anything, I feel sort of let down by the actual series premiere and all the hype surrounding the show. I will give it another episode to grow on me.
- They do make me sad or amazed sometimes, but they are fun to watch. Drugs on airplanes!? Sign up me!Jaline

New Don is a nice man .. not the narcissist who we grew to know. At first I thought the change was taking place too quickly .. and smoothly, but who's to say it wouldn't I guess; with a death acting as a classic watershed moment. He's been thinking back over his past gradually ever since Betty .. so there has been quite a build-up.
I think conceptually, I liked the fact that Don was character with very particular traits - and the way he's been portrayed as a bit of an enigma.
I've been brought up to think of personality as something that's quite inflexible .. while a person's character often looks different in the light and in amongst the shadows, I think a person's basic psychological make-up is there for good (save for a huge life altering event / mental breakdown or physical ailment).
Maybe I've got quite a cynical view regarding human capacity to change. The progression of Don's character seems far more optimistic.
Like the new Don too though.

There seemed a lack of interest for the last episode, it just looked rushed, Don getting married just didn't work, and there was a lack of story for that idea, and then not mush about how the agency was going to survive. Poor last episode.

Eh, not too exciting tonight, but I imagine it may be sort of a matter of laying groundwork for whatever effed up scenarios will develop later in the season. I looked up that poem he was reading, "Meditations in an Emergency." Wasn't too impressed with that either, but it's obviously significant.

I wish AMC would replay them once in a while. They never seem to show them after the original airing. Anyone know where to find the first few episodes of Season 3?
