    I actually think it's actually quite profound in subtle ways.

    It's showing a period which can be seen as a dawn or enlightenment age.... the teenage years of modern society. Arguably much of the worlds problems (rampant commercialism, the vacuous pursuit of money, etc) can be seen as a direct reaction to the work of the advertising industry on Madison Avenue.

    The adjustment and change that people in the show are experiencing is used to highlight this social change .. but while this progression could have been shown in quite an overtly allegorical way, the producers have managed to tie everything together with quite a lot of class and subtly.

    In that sense the series on a macro-level can almost be seen in the same light as a coming of age / road movie - but with society as the main protagonist.
