At a certain point if you don't have hands the size of Allan Holdsworth your playing just sounds like percussion. He obviously worked hard on his picking technique, but I found his actual music (from the MySpace and presumably the end of this video) extremely dry and inarticulate...
- Finding technical masters who are also extraordinary in their artistry and creativity is a rare thing.harlequino
- I don't think he's reached technical mastery. Speed yes, but articulation, rhythm, etc not really.ismith
- Holdsworth is the man. I'm not a huge fan of fusion or shred guitar but he is a heavy player.MrRemote
- But what you're saying is very true. I find Allan Holdsworth to be the best example of achieving both...ismith
- Hah, didn't see your comment.ismith
- Shawn Lane as well..although it took me a while to get into him...TheBlueOne

It looks like he's not moving his fingers at all, because to get to that kind of speed, you have to train yourself to not lift your fingers very high off the fretboard after hitting a note. Michael Angelo Batio (4-neck guitar guy .. haha) talks about it on speed kills. Makes sense - if you're neck is 2 cm away after each note, you have to move it 2cm back to hit the next note.

playing on an electric guitar with distortion, cutting bars as you move your picking hand faster and faster doesn't seem like a solid way to prove you are fast. He's just reducing the theme's difficulty as he accelerates. Give Paco or Al Di Meola an electric guitar and stand back.
- I don't like DiMeola's electric work honestly...TheBlueOne

The guy is Brazilian?! Damn, never expected that. I thought he was going to be from Scandinavia or something.
- why - there are some pretty awesome brazilian rock players as of late...TheBlueOne
- Yeah, but is not the most evident place for that to happen. I know it, i live here.combustion

where is ismith?

this guy is pretty crazy. His movements are so fluid. Wrist injuries shouldn't set in for some time. He's playing very well for keeping his wrists in good shape.
I want to see him do some crazy sweep picking :)

buckethead!
- moldero0
his right hand is fast, but hes not even moving his fingers on his left.
- moldero0
if he applied some of what he put into his right hand into his left, he'd be better.

Not many people can beat buckethead in his speed *style. He plays just off the wall shit that puts your hands into really odd positions. Most people play scales fast. He skips strings, sweep picks while tapping.... really funky stuff.
