Saw this last night. It was overly long and had about 3 points where it could end but boy, did I enjoy it. Having recently seen Hancock and the Incredible Hulk and thought what utter rubbish they were it was refreshing to be comprehensively entertained and thrilled by a film directed by someone as masterful as Christopher Nolan. Personally I think he made this film as good as it was. It's not a complicated plot by a long chalk either so I don't understand why some people seem confused by 'Freeman quitting' and 'Batman quitting' - unless they only ever watch standard Hollywood moron fare and there brains have become too altered to understand plot arcs and character developement in one 2 and half hour sitting.
Anyway, it's good etc etc and a huge improvement over Batman Begins which was overhyped and not as good as its reviews. As for Heath Ledger and his performance I have a theory. Heath Ledger was also working on Terry Gilliam's film the Imagination of Dr Parnassus before he died. Now I don't know when shooting began or if work/readings started during the Dark Knight but certain mannerisms, body movements, tics etc reminded me of the actor playing the Devil in Gilliams film. I'm not saying Heath Ledger was ripping off Tom Waits (Heath was a better actor than Waits ever will be I think) but if you've ever seen Tom Waits live or seen footage of him performing there are uncanny similarities.

Why didn't Batman just blame the death of Two Face on the Joker? I can't remember the entire ending and where Joker was at that moment. Who knows if he was still tied up on that skyscraper.

The mobile phone idea was great - it could totally work - how do we know that our government can't remotely activate just the microphone on your phone and listen to whatever your saying.
For the amount of people who carry a phone with them wherever they go and to be able to simply scan all the microphones for a certain voice, so you could then pinpoint their location is a pretty good idea... you could locate anyone as soon as they spoke near any mobile...

also, after thinking about it, i don't think they bring the joker back in the next movie, cuz common, Heath was great.. no one can top it. and Nolan knows it

Pretty damn good.
Though, 'pretty damn good' as a comic-book movie. By no means the brave new dawn for cinema it's being touted-as. Similarly, Ledger's act - wonderful. For a comic book movie. Unexpectedly menacing and dark. For a comic book movie. But it's, let's face it, merely a finally accurate rendering of the darkness of modern graphic novels - this kind of thing isn't really that unique out there in cinema land - it's just novel in this context.
And, frankly - that cellphone mechanic was fucking stupid - I'm glad they did what they did with it at the end, but while it existed, it lent Batman an omniscience that I don't think the character deserves.
I was also surprised at the fate of Harvey Dent - I mean, his arc was wonderful as a proxy for the city's heart - not so for the individual character - all that, for that?
Oh, and Batman's voice was laughable.
To clarify - I liked it, I just wish it hadn't been so inflated by everyone in internetland - it's not The. Best. Movie. Ever. as has been touted, but it is pretty damn good.

Me gusto mas Million Dollar Baby.

okay...here's where I get slammed
Spiderman 2 was better?
- Apples and Oranges. The only common thread is that they are comic book characters.

i freaking loved taht siren noise that played in the background everytime the joker was about to eff things up.

I haven't read the whole thread yet but I watched it last night and was wondering how the Jack Nicholson Joker fitted into the storyline? Is the Dark Night separate from Batman's previous outings? Because as far as I'm aware, didn't Batman 'create' the joker after chasing him and him falling into a vat of acid? Was that in the comics?
I'm a little confused, then again, it is monday morning.
- They are completely seperate i think.JamesBoynton
- totally separate. this is common even in comic books.skelly_b

Much better than the normal hollywood action stuff. It has a real dark edge.
