My office is inside my apt, next to my bedroom. It was furnished with dark, almost black wooden IKEA desks and shelves and after 14 years, it definitely was time for a change. Especially as I spend 10 hours per day in this room, when I am not on the road.
My wife is working in the same room, with the same new desk, but I have chosen the angle, so only my place is in the frame.
This is my new workspace:
I went for the just mentioned solution:
- 1 x IKEA Alex on the left
- 2 custom legs that I screwed to the desktop
- 180x75cm multiplex birch covered with RAL 9018 linoleumI measured and then mounted a 21mm multiplex birch plate underneath Alex to have the desk leveled. To my surpise I managed to have it 100% in level.
The desk space feels huge. And finally I have a new light office. It makes such a difference to the dark room that it was before.
I screwed a power strip to the back of Alex to tidy up the cables a bit.
The speciality of the custom made desk top is that there is a slope of 25 degees that makes the plate look thin and light.
In reality it is 3cm in thickness and the weight is 23kg. It is very stable.I don't know why linoleum isn't available in white, but I am happy with RAL 9018 (so-called Papyrus white).
The rest of the room is new, too. I bought a new lamp to hang from the ceiling. It's white as well, so you barely recognize it.
The sideboard holds my wifi printer (no more shitty cable) and the Monstera hasn't grown yet, so just as an example, I put it inside the pot I bought:
Last year, I framed a print for a client behind museum glas. It was very expensive but looked so amazing, I decided to buy this for my office, too. I chose two smaller frames (50x70cm). But the glas swallows most of the reflection, so the photos feel amazin when you look at them. I decided to change the photos 4 times per year.
My stuff rests behind a white curtain. It's a thick darkening curtain.
I set up an ugly but very stable metal shelf there to put all my stuff in there.
I also have my stereo back there and my wireless earphones, in case my wife works at her desk as well.
Now, I ordered a felt mousepad, because I am afraid to make scratches into the linoleum desktop with my mouse. Didn't have a mousepad for more than two decades, but well.

- Ooooh mounting the power strip in the back of your cabinet ... hadn't thought of that, great idea!Continuity
- I hate the radiator. Looks so shitty. But I am only rentin, so I cannot paint it. The windows are ugly, too.SimonFFM
- I think you've created a nice, tranquil space. I might suggest a comfy arm chair or mall sofa for relaxing also.monospaced
- Come on. These have to be CG renders.CyBrainX
- No, no. All real. The room has only 14sqm. Photographed with a 25mm lens. So it looks larger. My couch is in the next room, so I can chill there.SimonFFM
- will look great once you've tidied upFax_Benson
- Note that cutting mat may cause cancer over time. No one seems to know the level of exposure needed to put you at risk, though.nb
- I really like this setup. the radiator is a constant grid in your view, some quality white curtains can make these things disappear :) sup with the pencils?sted

I posted in the quarantine of the day post that I was getting stuff to build a new desk. https://www.qbn.com/reply/396053…
Thanks to utopian's comments about the potential for the Ikea karlby countertop to sag in the middle, I started rethinking the minimal legs I was going to use, then realized that this Karlby + Alex cabinet support combo is more popular than I realized.
I already have an Alex cabinet, so going to get another one and use those for supports on the Karlby cabinet. My plan is the same as before - trim 12" off the back so that the desk dimensions are:
Desk: 74" wide x 30.5 inches deep.
Shelf (using wood trimmed from main piece) 55" wide x 12" deep.My next dilemma was thinking of a proper way to get a slide out keyboard tray that will accommodate my midi controller. There are some people who make them on Etsy and they mount under the desktop. Considering I'll have the Alex drawers, I think my solution is to use cabinet drawer slides and.a piece of wood that I can stain to match the top.
I've got a neighbor across the street who has tools, saws, etc that can help me out.
Diagram:
My only concern right now is whether or not I'm comfortable with the 23" vertical space between floor and bottom of the slide-out keyboard tray. If this were an issue, the solution would be to put Ikea cabinet risers on the bottom, which would raise the desk by 4"
The other reason I'm glad to consider this route is that I had completely forgotten about an idea to house most of my effects pedals into the top two drawers of an Alex cabinet. Run power into it, have all my reverb / delay / modulation pedals at arms reach and just keep my volume pedal, tuner, and looper on the floor for easy access.
Any thoughts?
