I posted in the quarantine of the day post that I was getting stuff to build a new desk. https://www.qbn.com/reply/396053…

Thanks to utopian's comments about the potential for the Ikea karlby countertop to sag in the middle, I started rethinking the minimal legs I was going to use, then realized that this Karlby + Alex cabinet support combo is more popular than I realized.

I already have an Alex cabinet, so going to get another one and use those for supports on the Karlby cabinet. My plan is the same as before - trim 12" off the back so that the desk dimensions are:

    Desk: 74" wide x 30.5 inches deep.
Shelf (using wood trimmed from main piece) 55" wide x 12" deep.

My next dilemma was thinking of a proper way to get a slide out keyboard tray that will accommodate my midi controller. There are some people who make them on Etsy and they mount under the desktop. Considering I'll have the Alex drawers, I think my solution is to use cabinet drawer slides and.a piece of wood that I can stain to match the top.

I've got a neighbor across the street who has tools, saws, etc that can help me out.

    Diagram:

My only concern right now is whether or not I'm comfortable with the 23" vertical space between floor and bottom of the slide-out keyboard tray. If this were an issue, the solution would be to put Ikea cabinet risers on the bottom, which would raise the desk by 4"

The other reason I'm glad to consider this route is that I had completely forgotten about an idea to house most of my effects pedals into the top two drawers of an Alex cabinet. Run power into it, have all my reverb / delay / modulation pedals at arms reach and just keep my volume pedal, tuner, and looper on the floor for easy access.

    Any thoughts?

    • have you considered using a vesa arm instead for holding the monitors and raise them?ernexbcn
    • Can you do that to an iMac and a Thunderbolt monitor?mg33
    • oh I see, I think you need to buy the iMac with the thing built inernexbcn
    • but almost all monitors are mount compatibleernexbcn
