My parents had to spend money to get braces for all 5 of us.

5 years ago dentist suggested i get my wisdom teeth out cause they were badly decayed, i left it cause money and cause pain.

Last week it starting hurting like all hell out of nowhere, like damn that was painful. I was almost fainting from the pain.

So i went to a dentist and she tried to pull it out, with no luck. She said I needed to go to an oral surgeon, as they needed to cut away at some bone to be able to pull it out WTF.

So im freaking out for a week in the lead up to my day of surgery, they put me under twilight IV anaesthesia and local anaesthetics. The actual pulling of the tooth took about 10mins, it was a totally totally painless procedure for me.

What IS annoying and uncomfortable and at times a little painful is this slow recovery. I am over eating soft foods, but have learnt that the following are good in recovery from a wisdom tooth extraction:

    scrambled eggs - No pepper
    banana and milk smoothies
    mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes
soups with no bits in em (miso + tofu good)
    homemade applesauce
    mashed banana
    custard

I am now 72hrs in and I believe the threat of dry socket has substantially reduced. I have not smoked cigs ( i took it up again in Jan after 2 yrs not one drag) I had no intention of quitting, but dentist ask I quit before and after procedure, im on day 10 now with not one drag :)

I will go until Tuesday and then light up. I might even sneak one in before then, I had no intention of quitting this year.

In any case, the procedure was not at all as bad as I thought it would be.

I could hardly feel the tiny pin pricks for the local, just closed my eyes, the IV i did not feel at ALL. I had to ask them if they were serious when they said they removed it.

Pain was at 4-6 out of 10, painkillers (ibuprofen and paracetamol) have been the life saver.

72hrs in, off the antibiotics tomorrow, and the painkillers, onto pro-biotics and hopefully the mend!!

One thought - I have recently been diagnosed with an auto-immune disease, I do wonder if the constant attack on my immune system via my rotten abcessed tooth was the trigger for my auto-immune disease. I will update in the future to see if I feel any positive effects. :)

All in all, go and get your damn tooth pulled if the dentist says you need to. I put mine off for years, and in the end it was harder to pull, because it had rotted away in the meantime. Go get it done NOW, you are only making things worse for yourself, the procedure really isnt that bad at all, tell them you are anxious and you would prefer twilight anaesthesia.

    Good luck.

    • I took the probiotics while taking the antibiotics... oh man this is going to suckbklyndroobeki
    • huh? why?

I just took probiotics today, day after last amoxil

ive managed to grind my wisdom teeth down to the gums while i sleep due to stress. i got myself a mouth guard which i never wear. I haven't seen a dentist in almost ten years with my upper two wisdom teeth so ground down its almost like they are gone. I had gut wrenching pain maybe 3 years ago, i drenched those days in alcohol and oral gel...i assume both teeth have died since then.

due to the lack of insurance and dentist visits i gave up almost all sugar and brush at least three times a day + mouthwash. I wouldn't doubt I have an auto-immune disease myself..havent lost a full tooth yet just the halves of both upper wisdom teeth.

i wonder how much its going to cost me to take care of

    • dude. i strongly suggest you get that looked at. go get an xray. this shit was the #2 killer back in the day. tooth decay is no joke. it can and will kill you..rabbit
    • or at the very least attack your immune system so you have a sort of sepsis 24/7. not good man. can go to brain and it does cause heart problems also.rabbit
    • exactly what i had, half top wisdom tooth. does it smell if you stick your finger back there? if so get it out asap.rabbit
    • don't panic, you can't die from a rotten tooth. but you should go to the dentist anyway. can't avoid it forever.uan
    • and you are not the only one with that kind of problem, dentists know how hard it is for some ppl to make an appointment because of fear (price and pain).uan
    • get a consultation at least. I recently went for the first time in 15+years. The fillings I had fell out 10 years ago. I was convinced thatFax_Benson
    • I was entering a world of pain but turns out most of the hideous conditions I must have were merely psychological.Fax_Benson
    • You kind of can die from a rotten tooth, but it has to be severely abscessed. You'd care for it b4 it gets to that point.bklyndroobeki
    • Yea, thats how bad that shit is for you though hey far out. Just go get a checkup everyone.rabbit

wisdom teeth are just extra molars that typically cause health problems when they become impacted

    • What is the story here? Bad teeth can cause bad heart is that right?rabbit
    • bad teeth create a home for bacteria, which travels down your chest into your heart, which is a big cause for heart disease. even if you have no teeth, doesnotexist
    • having dentures helps. it eliminates the amount of bacteria that can live in your mouth.doesnotexist

When I was a kid I had super-numerary teeth. There was a third set without roots between my adult teeth and baby teeth Which needed to be removed along with all my baby teeth in order for my adult teeth to grow in correctly. (Yes, insert shark jokes, I've heard it before)

Flash forward to when I had my wisdom teeth removed. My doctor asked "Oh you had super-numerary teeth when you were a child? I ask because you have eight wisdom teeth...Well, this surgery wont be fun for you."

Eight....and yes having them removed did indeed suck!

    believe it or not @rabbit,

you and i are brothers in the tooth pulling. a dentist should never try to pull your teeth, is she foolish? wants to be sued for malpractice? she should have referred you to someone.

i went to an Oral Surgeon where, that's all he does 8-9/hrs a day.

    it's been about a week.
i'm off amoxicillin (heavy shit), and i think i moved back onto the solid foods too soon? i was dying without meat.

i can still feel a slight discomfort in the area but that's maybe because the bone is growing back?
about to call him today. not sure that i should still be feeling discomfort today.

    • an oral surgeon is supposed to do this. my family is in the teeth business.doesnotexist
    • WISDOM BROTHERS!!!!!!! FO LIFE.

To be fair, she did say go to Oral surgeon, and that she can at least try & it might be really easy, if after 5 mins she

    • discomfort would be expected I think? Let me know how you go. You should have a follow up appointment 1 week post surgery.rabbit
    • Are you a smoker? Drinker?rabbit
    • rabbit, not feeling a thing this week. was just things healing. i don't smoke, drink (used to like a fish, calmed down recently)bklyndroobeki

Dentists are capable of removing teeth, most will refer you to an oral surgeon if it looks in any way technical.

It's common to have to break bone to access your wisdom teeth.

Dry socket is also very common (even if you don't smoke, follow all precautions). I wouldn't wish that pain on anybody! But a few drops of clove oil will do wonders for exposed nerves.

I didn't feel 100% until a few weeks later after having two impacted wisdom teeth.

    • < Thanks for the good solid advice. This is exactly what happened to me OP. I have no dry socket yet, have not smoked at all in absolute FEAR. lol. apparentlyrabbit
    • painkillers dont do anything for dry socket and it can last 40 days most unbearable pain. wtfffffrabbit

    never had mine out..
for the longest time, i was freaking about it..
then one time at the dentist, i bite the bullet and asked about them.. he had a look, and told me mine were fine and would never need to be removed..

i can still feel the sense of relief..

I have a fear of tooth removal. Luckily never had one out, apart from when I was a toddler I pulled a front tooth out whole while chewing on a shoe buckle.

I had this problem molar and needed a root canal. 3 x 3 hour sessions in the chair (with agony in the days between sessions) because it was so badly infected. No pain in the chair, just fear. There's now a nice silver crown over said tooth and no problems.

Toothache is far worse than just going to the dentist.

    • Yes its just the fear more so isn't it. That is the worst part. Sitting in the chair hearing my heart beep, seeing the IV, the lab room induces a severe case ofrabbit
