If you were hired to do album art, which app would you consider to be best suited to the job? My first impulse makes me open Photoshop, but then a little thing inside me tells me I should use Illustrator, but then I remember I've never really used InDesign before. What do you guys think? I imagine I'll be doing the actual ART in illy, but would it make any sense to put that into InDesign for the booklets, cover, etc?

a combo of ps, illy and then lay it out in indesign

I do all my layout work in InDesign. I have templates which I have set up for 4Pp booklet, 8Pp booklet, etc. If Photoshop work is required then I use that, same with Illustrator, but it all ends up in ID.

What I have been taught is that any type work should be done in inDesign. So raster-based artwork of course created in photoshop, vector stuff in Illustrator, import that into inDesign with the document at correct dimensions plus Bleed or what ever, and combine with type. (Unless you have die lines of course then just stick to Illustrator ). Export as a PDF with proper color profiles. Then go through the pre-press work with PDF.

Being “hired” to do album art is somewhat of a misnomer, you see when a band or label approaches you... ah, never mind, you’ll find out!

I like the progressive steps to more detail LOL

Well long story about the client, doesn't need any more info really, but.... one more question.
Anyone know of a good printer for Digipak cases?
- ismith0
How much are we talking? I'm guessing a very limited run, 50-100 of each disc. Probably 5 different discs in the end.
- MrOneHundred0
Not sure how it is in the US, bur here in OZ very few places do such short runs. The minimum tends to be 1000. Anything less, especially as few as 100 really blows out the per-unit cost. You should maybe think about getting the CDs printed and duplicated and doing a speciality screen-printed fold out envelope/sleeve thing. Give it a real limited-edition feel.

I was going to suggest an pretty specialized off-set printer, but I would just search online for that kind of run. I don't know how pricing works compared to quality based on such a limited run.

I can think of plenty of other ways to package them, but I was thinking Digipacks for the label execs and then the handmade stuff for limited giveaways & auctions and such.
It would be nice to know the price of Digipak, even for a 1000 if you can. It's not the most practical, but I'm just thinking ahead a little bit to get a feel for all my options.
- For the label execs, may I suggest you wrap them in cocaine?MrOneHundred
- Hah, I was thinking LSD blotters for the booklet.ismith

Although right now it's 1:20am, so I'd best be getting some sleep. Will look for replies tomorrow I guess. Damn snow is going to double my commute...

Dude I have an Epson... I could print out some 4.5 4.5 pieces of paper black and white.. we can tape it to the cds.. Color would be 49 cents a print.
- MrOneHundred0
If you’re talking snow, any place I could recommend might be a bit further than your commute, unless you want to get it printed in Australia.

I hear the sailing is nice in Australia.
- So do I. We common folk don’t get to hit the water too often. ;-0MrOneHundred

I can make the drive to the following cities for a printer: New York, Boston, Philadelphia... I'll be searching Google, but if anyone has experience with printers in those cities that will print on Digipak then do tell.
