By the way, the hype around Obama reminds me of Trudeau-mania.
Very charismatic.

right, I've had difficulty keeping up with this a little over here, so do you mind if an interested outsider asks a question?
forgive me if this sounds a bit devil's advocate (its what I'm doing I suppose and from a fairly ignorant position ;) ), but could someone please break down into say 4 or 5 broad policy points what Obama is actually going to do to change America into this renewed land of hope which he has you all fired up for?
His rhetoric and public speaking is very good, but I keep hearing the same phrases over and over and I don't know if it is purely because he is very 'soundbyte-able' or because his message is pretty shallow.
I wonder if you will end up comfortably sitting on your porches staring into the middle distance imagining hopefully the change around the corner, and always the next corner
Help me understand if you will, please, and forgive my tone as someone who grew up his whole life waiting to kick the thatcherite tories out of parliament, only to end up with our current lot.

1. Stop the top down tax cuts
2. Stop giving incentives to companies that outsources employees (reverse it actually)
3. The war and a sensible way to get out of Iraq.
4. Reinstate veterans benefits to the way they were before Bush.
5. Meet with "hostile" middle eastern leaders and try to resolve disputes diplomatically rather than by the barrel of a gun.I could go on.

Quotes like this:
“I am in this race to tell the corporate lobbyists that their days of setting the agenda in Washington are over. I have done more than any other candidate in this race to take on lobbyists — and won. They have not funded my campaign, they will not get a job in my White House, and they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I am president.”
— Barack Obama, Speech in Des Moines, IA, November 10, 2007
He doesn't take lobbyists money. So he doesn't owe them anything.

nice. cheers Dobs - all I hear over here is the "hope" and "change" strapline phrases

I know what you mean Kelpie, his site outlines things rather nicely:

Color me a bit cynical, but I don't expect much from Obama, policy-wise. He is a politician, and he has to work within the system, which is always the hard rocks upon which any wave of change crashes against. If he even does 25% of what his rhetoric implies I'd be happy though.
What I do like Obama for is he changes the arena, he broadens the scope and really does bring a bit of sunshine to the dark clouds that have hovered over us since 2001. All Bush has done is alienate the populace from the government. "You stay over there, and we'll take care of things over here, and fuck you if you don't like it."
What I do like about Obama is that under his style of leadership many other people would start to feel empowered, begin to feel that government is a force of good and not something to be drowned in a bath tub, something that should be run for the common good and not for those who have the inside track in a "free market", especially the young, and dammit do we need them. We really do. Obama makes me feel like if I did something for society it would count for something. Bush has made me feel like if I did something, Homeland Security or the CIA would come knocking at me door asking me why I'm being uppity...
I hope an Obama presidency would get rid of "Free Speech Zones", would lead us to a smarter, efficient fight against terrorists, give people a reason to actually give a shit about doing something good for someone else. Good leadership does that by rhetoric and example, even if it doesn't always succeed...
- bravo, that's a really good explanationkelpie

Healthcare is a big one for me, we need to do something about this shit. We need to educate our public about the truth of healthcare. Most Americans think that we have the worlds best healthcare, which simply isn't true, not even close actually, and people think this because they are ignorant sheep that don't think for themselves. They buy into this "America is the best country" thing because they just swallow whatever patriotic bullshit the oldfarts feed to them.
A prime example would be the muslim Obama thing. Hes not muslim, they think he is because they are idiots who just swallow the shit they are fed. Also, these people can't seem to wrap their fingers around the whole "seperation of church and state" thing.
Seriously, I'm tired of these ding dong oldfarts shaping a country that I have to live in for the rest of my life.
- The same people who think he's a muslim are the same 29% who think Bush is a fucking genius.TheBlueOne
- Even if he was there shouldn't be so much discussion about it in the way it has been talking about.Jaline
- True Jaline, but realistically...you know...TheBlueOne

Also, I never understood why anyone would be a Republican if they aren't filthy rich. It baffles me. Its like they want to be a part of the "high society" club, but they don't get the benefits of the membership. In fact, it works against them. Idiots.

No doubt, my Mother was telling me last night about some slag she works with that was saying Obama is a terrorist because her rightwing sister told her that he was and on and on. Lady, you are a fucking moron, don't vote.
- Yeah, cause Chicago is where all the terrorists come from.TheBlueOne
