Have a big 3 month long freelance illustration job coming up, what's a good and fair rate to charge hourly?
- brains0
Non? Being on salary so long, and never handling a freelance job of this scope, I'm just kind of unsure.

I think it really depends on the work. Can you expand?
Not you personally, I mean can you expand on the type of thing you'll be doing? In-house? End-use? etc etc

How much do you want to make? Divide that by how many hours you estimate the job to take and if thats a reasonable number, there you go.

has nobody suggested between 1 and 1000 units of your indigenous currency yet?

$10,000/month

On the one hand that's skileld hand labour, so 'quite high', but on the other, it doesn't sound exactly like the kind of thing that would pay massively well.
Are the maps creative in any way? ie are they commissioning you for the way you will add your style to their maps, or are they commissioning you becuase you are a capable draughtsman who will faithfully reproduced the maps the way they need them?
Makes a difference becuase the former should be paid as illustration and the latter as draughstmanship.

stuff like this.

They are doing it for me to add my style to the map. I'm no draughtsman in any way shape or form, this is to make the maps appealing to the younger and older generations.

As long as you have a good idea of the scope of the project, quote a flat fee, not hourly. Make sure your contract states explicitly what is expected of you, and additional work will require a newly negotiated fee. Also make sure usage is completely clear. Is it just print? How long can they reproduce it? 1yr, 2yr? If they want to own copyright, charge 150% to 200% of your original fee.
Get 1/3 up front, 1/3 in the middle, and the remaining 1/3 upon completion.

think they got enough ads in there?

I think I;d refer back to Lumedia's point. That example seems to me to be perfectly balanced between a creative illustration and a skilled piece of draughting. I would aim high and see how it goes, but I stilll couldn't put a figure on it personally.

How many of these maps are you doing?
- horton0
the GAG handbook has recommended rates for map & chart design based on size of company and print size of map.

They're looking to own these, right? They'll want to use these for several years and will likely want to be able to reproduce as long as they want.
Overbid like crazy, and then send them a link to my site :D
