this is the first time pricing layouts for a website. i'm going to offer three layouts but i don't know what price range to present. does it depend on the client? because i have no idea what kind of price this client will go for. i've only priced entire websites, not layouts oddly enough. so what should i ask for?

Maybe shoot for about half of what you would charge for a website. I feel like a lot depends on the circumstances - who is the client, how much time to you intend to devote to the project etc. No hard and fast rules here.

4 hours per concept + $65 per hour + 3 concepts. = $780

4 hours a concept? That is crazy fast.
- studderine0
k0na is crazy fast..

other things to think about, will it be a static site or dynamic. who will program it. if its not you, then that a extra cost.

780 bucks isn't very much for that much work

it's going to be very dynamic. i will program the initial phase. they want to add a social network component in the future. but it will be a site for a magazine. i don't know if i can charge $65 an hour, i'm not at a hobo-stabbing level.

Yup, Kona is usually too fast at everything.

Looking at your profile, you are in New York. I think 8 hours per concept (for truly unique concepts) x a daily rate. That could vary between 300/day and 500/day depending on your experience, etc.
If you're fresh on the scene maybe less...
I'd say $900 clams plus allow a budget to buy some stock photos. Say $960 for three PSDs delivered.
Don't undercut yourself. For a decent customer, less than a grand to get phase one out of the way and to start seeing their baby come to life is VERY REASONABLE.
- perfectly stated.mrdobolina
- i know people that charge $600 -$1000 per day. if the work stands up, go for it.Faction18

guys... as long as there are designers willing to work for 65/h on hourly bases and committing to 4hhs/ comp... graphic designers will never make any money... its ok to do maintenance at cost and materials rate... but original design? you need to explore it.. you need to take your time with templates... set up grids... colors... all in 4hhs per comp? ridiculous. i dont really do freelance as much as i used to but i choose my projects wisely.. i prefer quoting anything over 3-4 Gs.... please.. quote 8hhs at least per concept... thats design time... no exporation.. image research... checking out the competition... cmon! review time... edits... you can easily boast your hhs.
- true, there is tax on that 65 also, which leaves you with...nada. :-)akrokdesign
- I get by just fine charging 130 an hour with my 9-5. The 65 is only when i want to, not because i have to.k0na_an0k

Is it understood with client that they will be getting billed for layouts only? Look at it this way, are you definitely getting the gig? If so, then charge minimally for layouts then make up the lost hours in billing for the site. You can just see that phonecall, "So you charge me how much for LAYOUTS?!!! What's the site going to cost me?!!!"
- AndyRoss0
If you charge properly (that is, stiffly and firmly) for the layouts, who cares if you "get the gig." After the layouts are done, the rest is just production work.
- The rest is production work! Wow. The bulk of the work for a site usually ends up in the building, not making comps in Photoshop.TResudek

i sent an email with 6-8 hours per layout at $55/hr and ran away from the computer.

when clients don't reply to quotes i can't help but think they were just fishing for prices.
