Well thanks, a few other people seem to appreciate my sense of humor too.
Still don't have a clue what you're laughing about though.

OK, so I have to admit. I am guilty of reading the bible. It is quite an interesting and amusing story.

(Oct 12 07, 11:57Atheism isn't a ..er.. theism though - so it's hardly an appropriate umbrella comparison, like [insert named religion], is it? Hyper socialist experiments were beyond god, beyond spiritualism, beyond humanity.
I feel it's a nonsensical, spurious comparison.
- gramme0
hmm...I'm not convinced you know what you're laughing at either.
I know a few people who laugh when they are nervous and uncomfortable.

Nairn: I disagree. The regimes I listed were explicity materialistic in their undergirding philosophies. They may not have loudly proclaimed an atheist agenday (save for Pol Pot), but at their core, they were indeed operating from that presupposition.

Fair enough, they espoused an anti-theistic stance, that I won't deny. But 'atheism' as a concept isn't a binding philosophy amongst its proponents.
Religions are.
These 'socialists' didn't commit their atrocities under the banner of 'atheism' - they did under banners with their own faces on.
- Nairn0
My point being, I am atheist.
I am not an atheist.
Actually, I'm essentially agnostic, but that's beside the point.

atheism = secular humanism
=
worshipping ourselves. Of course their faces were on their banners.
- BonSeff0
nowadays any non believer is an atheist it seems
- Nairn0
No, no, no - that's exactly it.
Atheism = belief there is no god.
My beliefs, or lack thereof, share no heritage with whatever ideals such odious forces as the Pots or Stalins of this world represent.
I see your point - you can criticize secular humanism, just don't lump me and my beliefs in with them. There is no shared 'religion' amongst atheists (Dawkins and the Brights aside!).
