Dear Nt,
With out ado, here is a logo that I wish to have critiqued.
I seek to make a small freelance gig. nurban isn't supposed to be New Urban, Nu rban, but a combination of Nature and Urban.
I live in Minnesota where the peeps are quite familiar with the outdoors. i am trying to put the area where I live into my work without going overboard with trees, skyscrapers, and shit.
Further along (note 'lack of portfolio' thread for reference), i wish to showcase my skills of illustration, print, web, and a clear communication of the aforementioned.
I look forward to your comments.
Thanks,
Jay

nurban = very bad name
puns are for idiots
i dont even think you can call this a pun, just a really bad play on words
start again!

also, stay away from the word urban, it's been killed and implies a whole bunch of things you may or may not want to be implying.

what nick said

if you want it to represent nature, i think you're going to have to make that a little more clear - that reads as 'n urban' to me, or just plain 'nurban' (but leaving me thinking - what's with the 'nu'?)
i quite like the stark green/black combination of colours - but you need to do more with the text and the logo.

yeah and if you must stick with the name, the logo looks alittle childish...

i mean where the n and u overlap you can see an "i"...was that on purpose...or bad illustrator skills?
- studderine0
oh ok...now i see what you were trying to do...with the green...or wait..i dont even know.
- studderine0
you may want to stick with your first and last name..

studderine, just shut up
- studderine0
hhaha.

right on.
as per the over lap. combining these two letter forms has been tricky. often a lower case 'n' and 'u' looked like an 'r & 'u'.
i didn't wish to show the 25 computer sketches, and the dozens in the sketchbook. that would be an even worse time than these per se.
as for nurban, i like the way it sounds. perhaps it would be stronger just spelled out.
as the the type faces. i dig the gotham family. gotham is a great sanserif family that is modern and urban.
gotham rounded, like the discription on H&F-J site suggests, is often seen (albeit similarly) in the wilderness on carved wooden signs.
keep the comments coming. i appreciate it.

nurban may sound nice to you, but to me it sounds completely idiotic. it's also impossible to make the connection between nature and urban... feels like you're connecting new and urban. it also sounds like turban, turd bin, nerd bin, i dont know, i just think its probably the worst name ever. you should think about it...
when you say:

"gotham rounded, like the discription on H&F-J site suggests, is often seen (albeit similarly) in the wilderness on carved wooden signs."
and the like... you are REALLY reaching... your VAG is what hits first, and as somebody has already pointed out, it looks quite childish. also, gotham isn't complimenting it at all.
if you take a look at the upnorth logo i linked, you see 3 clear references, the plaque, the deer, and the baseball 'swoosh'... these are the types of devices that actually communicate.

(Jul 5 07, 18:15)that is exactly what I am trying to stray from. too cliché.
- r_mutt0
that is fair enough.
i would say then that you should hit the drawing board again.
what are you trying to accomplish by overlapping your n and u? it makes no sense and looks bad.
- blaw0
i don't mean to be harsh, but i don't think you are on the right track.
colors, typography, overall style... just not doing it.
probably best to start over. sorry.
- studderine0
i like the typeface on the second one...but the logomark, symbol...whatever you want to call it doesnt fit.

(Jul 5 07, 18:18)whoops, i think i forgot what i was going to say 2x ago.
with the overlap: i wanted to have the letter forms merge, and using color was effective to show both an n and a u.
unfortunately, i do know there may be a problem in my execution. the font that i bought didn't have a consistent stroke throughout the letter forms, which is what I was looking for. so the drawing board could be near. but I'm going to let this sink in a bit before i continue.
thanks for the input thus far.

BUT WHY????????????????
