So can we say, nighty night Blu-Ray. I'm so glad this whole fiasco will be over this year.
1. Launching the PS3 with BD drives and taking a loss just to push adoption: $1 billion
2. Issuing a PR campaign saying the war is over and Blu-ray won: $ 100 million
3. Watching Walmart selling HD DVD stand alone players at $199: priceless
LOL

The official word is that the 100 mill. is for the first batch. The complete order is around 300 mill. US dollars or approx 5-6 million HD-DVD players by the end of 2008.

so you have some sort of axe to grind with sony then?
- Boz0
Me? Not really, I do prefer HD-DVD as more consumer friendly format yes, but I'm just transfering latest news. I have both PS3/Blu-Ray and HD-DVD w/ 360 however I have 32 HD-DVD movies and only 8 Blu-Ray..:)
It's interesting though that Fox pulled all of their scheduled Blu-Ray releases recently with the announcement that Blu-Ray had some DRM problems they were waiting to get fixed before they go ahead with the release, but with this announcement I'm fairly sure Fox knew this was coming and pulled back to see what will happen.

old news/speculation.
pr0n made the hd-dvd choice in january.

How is this old news speculation when press releases were published a few hours ago.
If you don't think that 6 million $199 HD-DVD players in Wall-Mart by 2008 is not going to win it then you must be smoking something right now.
- mrdobolina0
nah, he's saying porno decided hd-dvd is where its at a few months back, and they dictate the format because they sell more of them than anyone.
- Boz0
oh..well I don't think that porn makes an impact as it did with VHS simply because back then there was no online porn.
Even so, this is definitely a final nail in Blu-Ray coffin.

you did not test on the Great Salt Flats so shut it up - your speed records are NOTHING compared to what Sony does in a labratory.

it's funny in that the pornography industry has historically chosen the lower quality of the two formats and continues to do so.
content truly is king.

"lower quality HD", i love technology

From Engadget:
Update: Pull back the reigns HD DVD fanboys, Akihabara now says that they've made a "huge mistake" with their translation: the original source called it "?? HD DVD and ?? means Blu-RAY." In other words, Blu-ray HD DVD. Huh? Word to the wise: since both formats use blue lasers, it's best to wait for an English press release before either camp celebrates.

@dahl
Already confirmed..a lot of native chinese speaking members of AVS Forums have confirmed it's HD-DVD in question. There's an official press release on Fuh Yuan site and other people translated it too. They are just trying to blow smoke on Engadget.
The thing they are saying in the press release is blue light HD-DVD, meaning blue light laser HD-DVD as they created red laser DVDs that had HD in the models as well.
It is indeed HD-DVD in question.

It will still take more than two million HD DVD players from a no brand to wrap up this format war.
- Boz0
well it's 100 mill. dollars for players in retail Q4 2007. That's 2 million drives. The total amount is $300 million and it will ship probably around 6 million players by the end of 2008. So yeah, I can be pretty confident in saying Walmart takes a format and that format will win.
It's nighty night to blu-ray unless they somehow come out with $299 blu-ray which is most likely NOT going to happen as they can't really lose that much money.
What I see though is companies like Samsung, Pioneer and Panasonic going neutral. Actually Samsung is already doing by building a new HD-DVD capable player.
You have to understand why everyone supported Blu-Ray is not because it was better format, it was because Sony said "We promise to destroy HD-DVD with PS3 right off the bat and you will make awesome money on peripherals as we can push them at higher cost as new technology". That's why they signed up.
But as time passed they saw that this was not the case. 600k PS3 consoles sold? BAD!
Almost all studios went neutral except Sony, MGM and Fox and MGM is also owned by Sony so no surprise there.
Fox delayed all of their upcoming Blu-Ray releases, for what they said was a glitch in Blu-Ray's DRM system and they are waiting for BD+ Java implementation. Of course, this was said before Walmart announcement but now it all makes sense. They found out about the Walmart move and are probably thinking about going neutral right about now.
It's over my friend. With 2 million STAND-ALONE players for $199 and about 250k units by Toshiba+MS HD-DVD player this was is over. Not to mention that now, with this, MS will most definitely see HD-DVD has bigger chance now and might even consider embedding HD-DVD drive. Nintedo was hesitant about using HD-DVD drive in their Wii but they were still rumouring that a new Wii will come out end of this year with HD-DVD built in for the same price.
As I said, it's pretty much over IMO.

You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity.

Yeah, I'm finding it very difficult to find emotional sustainence from "victory" in a media format war.
Of course, I didn't even get a boner when Zip drives replaced Syquest cartridges.

why is everyone shitting their pants over HD-DVD overselling BR for one month? Once the the PS3 gets a larger marketshare (which it will eventually) HD-DVD will be a thing of the past.
