"Tell you what, how about we each spend the next ½ hour scouting the internet for clever-sounding articles which we can then post to each other and claim as being born of our own understanding?"
hahaa you just described 99.9% of NT duder

read this couple of year ago, and literary changed my life. I'm a blank canvas and can turn myself and my reality into anything i want! Yay me!!
Just gotta figure out what desires motivate me - right now it's pussy, only pussy :P :D :P
- Nairn0
Flagellum - It's not that I "don't get well-reasoned philosophical arguments" (such typical conceit!), it's more that the constant, overbearing drive of your monotone bores the living shit out of me.
I'd rather spend a little extra time and read 'philosophical treatises' that are unsullied by your trite Christian perspective.
- Kuz0
well to be honest, yeah i'm consumed with chasing minge right now, but more than that, it's fucking memes - thats perplexing because we all have to learn what to desire, and mirror this from what others desire - and right now my mission is to develop my own CORE identity - self improvement? Nah, we're talking about SELF DESTRUCTION (said Tyler Durden in that film fight club). It's tricky but well worth it, that i can build myself bottom up - and take control of the backward rationalisation my consciousness constructs out of my chemical emotions - its a process of EMOTIONAL FITNESS. Now i know, i know, all of this shit i get from cheesy self help gurus - You BECOME what you think YOU ARE - yeh fair enough, but its a fact of our culture that we live in the age of mechanical reproduction, and as such, all the wisdom that used to be imparted by myths and legends and relgious dogma, is now conveyed through pop-pyschoogists and commercial psycho-babble industry - but having said that, though it makes it less authentic - it's no less true because of it..
Sorry, incomprehensible streams of consciousnes.
I ordered this book an'all.

hope you get to read that economist article nairn. It's pretty good
xx

There are some great books which expose the errors of physicalism and the bottom-up approach. And how neuroscience neglects to consider the physical brain as merely the physical apparatus which chanels consciousness (think radio and radio waves).

lol
the battle of the books with flagellum. Can't beat them in debate - bombard them with books!!
touche, motha fucka, TOUCHE!!

The logic of this paper is pretty much inescapable for the physicalist:
- flagellum0
Oh I presented my position quite cogently above, prior to any book links. :)
- flagellum0
Remember - don't hold me accountable for the things my molecules have determined that I do!
- Kuz0
you not accountable on a moral level know, cos morality is bullshit, but yeah, as an individuated being in social space.. you will be dealt with accordingly.
The commune has spoken.
- flagellum0
you were determined to advise me in that way, kuz because you have no free will. Therefore, your advice is meaningless.
How can I be "dealt with accordingly" when I was determined to do it? We are all just particles. Nothing matters. Not in principle.
The atoms bumping into each other have spoken.
- Kuz0
hey man - that's cool, don't take my advise. It's all meaningless. You'll still get yer arse kicked if you dont, but your cool man, if you need the Lord God of Abraham to validate everything you do before you do it. Sure, go ahead.
Yeah, we're all atoms bumpin into each otther, and beneath that wer're electrons and neutrinos and antineutrinos, and above that we're compounds and organic compounds, and then like cells, and genese, and organs, and animals, and plans, and trees, , and apes, and people, and tribes, and cities, and societies and countries, and NATO, and the Alliance of the Willing, and Planets, and Stars and the UNIVERSE! You can categories all you want -thats cool - whatever helps you perceive easiest, up to you man. Either way man, there's causes and consequences. Thats all i care about. Reality is a trip, sure.
- Kuz0
oh, and trust me - you WILL be dealt with accordingly. You mark my words. You will....
- flagellum0
Of course I will be dealt with. That's how the world works. This is what I'm getting at - we instinctively know that we are more than the sum of physical matter. We know that our decisions are real and we know that the consequences of our decisions actually DO matter. And this is why we hold people accountable for what they do.
And this is why we recognize the absurdity of materialistic reductionism. :)
- Kuz0
not at all why we recognise the absurdity of materialistic reductionism yadda yadda yadda
The key is in what you just said "we instinctively know"
- _salisae_0
funny nairn isn't bothered by kona's inanity but try and outsmart him and he's a regular whining child throwing a fit!
:p
- flagellum0
Right, but if what we think we instinctively know to be true is merely illusory and we are just the sum of physical molecules, then, in principle, nothing matters and there should be no accountability for any actions. After all, there would be no unique "self". Just collections of matter no different from the keyboard i'm typing on.
- Kuz0
wait QBN deleted bits of my post, i'll write it again one sec
not at all why we recognise the absurdity of materialistic reductionism yadda yadda yadda
The key is in what you just said "we instinctively know" - did you know what you meant when you were typing this??? Our instinvtive behaviour is genetically programmed into us!!! Ergo - instinctinve!!
OMG!! This is just like when in ants and another female ant attempts to mate and the workers get wind of this and the Queen eats her the fuck out! (not in a lesbian way)
Do you think ants sit aorund pondering the intricacies of their moral code?? No sir! Thye are biologically instinvtively programmed for their behavious. Just like us.
So sad so true
Every dynamic system in the universe reaches equilibrium in this way. Apart from black holes. They scary. :/
