(Dec 14 06, 13:41)When you introduce yourself on interviews, you should firmly shake hands and then immediately punch everyone in the groin. You will thus achieve a completely neutral greeting.
Just kidding, nice work.

that was the strategy i used before. which is probably why i was having such a hard time getting a call back...

what's your end-goal, matty?
what kinda joint are you looking to get in with?
cuz... as you can see - there are many diff. realms of designers from corpo to posh boutique gigs commenting here...
... and I've actually taken all this advice and lumped it on myself as I'm rebuilding my folio myself...
... and I can't make a decision on 'where' I'd put the Bush piece if it were mine...
... cuz, it 'could' hurt OR it could be a heralding factor that they'll remember you for...
... so I guess it comes down to 'who' you want to work for. Your a skilled chap - I'm pretty sure you're a fine fit at any number of places...
... so.. 'aim' for the positions that you really want. Research who you're interviewing for or who you're presenting to...
... adjust as you see fit to adequately 'sell yourself' to each potential employer... and in order to do that... you need to research who it is that is interviewing you (look at their work... read their 'about' section) etc etc...
... else, I think you'll be adjusting your portfolio left and right based on the critique of one person vs. the other in a non-ending cycle of pure hellish turmoil that will cost you sleep, diminish your sex drive and make you an all-around unfriendly fella... nahmean? :)

i hear ya pony. the good thing about all these crits is that they are relevant. they aren't mundane that its not worth doing, yknow?
but, the end game would probably be working in an agency (but not one of those leave work at 2am and be back by 10am type of deals--if that exists) in manhattan. i tried to beef up the look and feel of my sports pieces so that they have more of a unique feel to them which hopefully some agency with a sports account could use. but, i know i can apply my style to almost anything when given a brief.
so, i guess im not gonna be picky in where i work, i just want it to be challenging and not corporate.

alright, updated it, but used arrows instead of 'prev' and 'next'.
thoughts?

what's an iframe?

Haha, you know those images like where one person sees a Candle Holder and another person sees two faces looking at each other?
It's like that with the Bush image I guess.
I see dunce cap and mock crown I guess, haha.

I see the ?tv logo just before the basket players load
I kinda liked the next/prev. thing better. But I'm european and can read, maybe it's better with arrows for you yanks. :)

so what was the outcome of this thread? who won? who lost? does bush stay? give me the gossip.
- PonyBoy0
i think matty decided to call it quits and become a hobo...
... k0na should be whoopin' him up something dirty right about now. :)

given the prominence of MTV in NYC, I wonder if that work isn't more 'politically' damaging than the bush piece.
- mattyd040
oooh, didn't think of that, material. good point.
though, i do think that most people will see the point of view im bringing up. and, it wasn't a personal piece, it was designed for an article about MTV's lack of music.
but thanks for raising that. i wouldn't have thought anything of it.
- material-10
just a thought, I'd be curious how others feel about it esp, agencies pitching to mtv etc.
- CyBrain0
I would not scrap the Bush thing for fear of political reaction. I'm proud to say there is hardly a place in the country more anti-Bush than NY. There is a use for editorial design in publishing and that could be lucrative for you since your strength is illustration and image.
I wouldn't miss it that muchif you do scrap it though. I think most of your work is superior.
Agencies are looking for anything and everything. You should do fine. Good luck and welcome to NY.
- CyBrain0
My only criticism is that I didn't really notice the Next Previous buttons for a few seconds. They should probably be more prominent.
On your Sell out/Black Eyed Peas piece you have the words Sell Out next to The Clash. That couldn't be farther from the truth.
- mattyd040
i hear what you are saying, CyBrain, but in the article that i designed it for, it talks about how clash songs are now used on commercials and television show theme songs and that they didn't do that until joe strummer died. once he did, the rest of the band started selling the songs...
