that's the point, he was taking popular brands and manipulating them as a stealth method of putting Obey in your face. So, Obey has original branding and he has ripped gorilla manipulations.. all in the spirit of gorilla marketing. To scream rip on Obey is missing the point all together.
ronaldoobey's name is shepard fairey. i'm sure you know this but you posted as if you didn't know who was behind it.
he ripped "old-school" guerilla marketing which many of the viewers had no clue or insight into...thus thinking that it was "original"...and that is where the lines blur.
i got several of shep's prints hanging in my living room right now. i bought them all over five years ago and still think they look good. so i'm not realy sure where i stand : )
art is fucking art plain and simple. it hangs on walls; no matter what that wall is, be it a gallery or your basement. so many copycats since the idea of art as piece on your wall...

Let me get this straight... Fuct is upset because both he and Obey reproduced some of the most famous images in the world?
That image of Mao was official propaganda and it was everywhere in China while he was alive...
And the cuban poster of Angela Davis is almost as well known as the Che image in revolutionary circles...
And as for Kiss... That's one of the most popular bands on the planet... Plus the treatments are quite different...
As for the other stuff... the old giant logo is obviously an intentional referencing of the Fuct brand, the Erik B. and Rakim shirts don't even resemble each other, and neither do the belt buckles. You can't 'own' something in the public domain...
Anyone remember someone named Andy Warhol...?
- Tavish0
And yes, I know they have proper names, but their brands are better known than their real names... and shorter to type :)

Andy who?

I think it would be one thing if Shepard Fairey was some no-talent toy who never put in any work. Not saying that makes a rip okay. Just saying he didn't just do high-profile spots to make a quick buck
Dude definitely put in the time and energy to be UP literally almost everywhere.
He also has tons of pieces (esp. his recent printmaking collages) that are def. unique very well-done.
Call me a fan-boy, I'm not trying to defend him, I could care less what anyone thinks of him, just sayin my piece. You can call him a biter or sell-out for the fuct drama, but he still puts in more and better work than most.

Shepard Fairey is just as fucking bad an Josh Davis. worship away idiots.
- Tavish0
Hmm you're coming off as frustrated... Care to explain why Fairey and Davis are categorically 'bad'?
I'm not personally a big fan of either person's style, but I do think they have talent and know how to promote it.

sellouts?
you have to record a few bad main-stream albums in order to aford the time/money it takes to make something you like.
- RADNESS0
This argument is getting really fucking stupid. Move on.

Erik Brunetti Hates Shepard Fairey
Erik Brunetti, self proclaimed artist and owner of "action sports" clothing company Fuct, hates Shepard Fairey, creator of the Obey campaign.
Everyone hates you when you're on top, but to let your panties become so twisted that you post rants like this on your website is pretty kook if you ask me... Which you didn't. But whatevs.
"When I heard Shepard Fairey was having another show at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery [in Los angeles] I felt my stomach turn. Are you a revolutionary, Mr. Fairey? Judging by your Zapatistas, women in chadors, and punk rock icons I'd make the assumption you were. Then again, rebellion doesn't happen under the guise of multi-million dollar clothing companies. Nor is there any honor in having legions of kids wheat-paste your images for you, but I bet it's nice to keep your hands clean. Fairey's subjects acted out of desperation to become heroes and icons; buy into them, not the Obey Propaganda machine. In addition...I will be posting images of all the graphic ideas Mr. Fairey, has (in my opinion) robbed me of over the years...then you can judge for yourselves." - Erik Brunetti
Did dude forget he owns a streetwear company himself? Or that he screens rock iconography as well? Typical hater stee, for sure.
Bonus icing on the cake is one of Erik Brunetti's goons, Nick Agnew, and his Cobrasnake rant. Hate, formed like Voltron.
