some of those places are good for food, and some of them aren't. also, you're basically talking about the scotland of america when you're dealing with the deep south, so it's not going to be like there's brilliant meals in any old restaurant. like you've said before, the home cooking was where it was at, and i reckon you'd find the same in northern scotland. point being, that apart from the two coasts (the london of the states, if you will) you're going to be seeing a fair amount of shit food. but you can't base your opinion of american cuisine (yes, there is one) on such a small sampling of geographic locations. sorry.

12 states isn't small, and they aren't all in the deep south.
I think the few weeks traveling around gave me a pretty good idea of what's on offer.

moth, did you strictly hit diners and denny's or what?
- paraselene0
not all are in the deep south, no. and also, for the record, i class the deep south as one of the best foodie heavens in the foodie heaven that is the u.s. but 9 out of those 12 are southern (a few are the mid-south) and the remaining three are MIDWESTERN. which means utter shite when it comes to food. i dunno. either you had bad luck, didn't try hard enough, or didn't see the beauty of the stuff on offer. maybe you'd never like it, even if you got the very best examples. who knows?

no offence, midwest!
*waves white flag
there are some lovely things there, too! but they're a bit tougher to find, in my experience.

kinda funny, last week we're eating at the ballys buffet and this dude from cali's plate was full of seafood, greens basically more healthy food. My buddy's from MI plates were full of pasta, creamed spinach, cheese, breaded chicken and what I like to call midwestern food. It's a lifestyle thing, midwests all about business class... to fat for coach!

i tried as hard as I always do when somewhere new.
on the same trip I also saw a bit of Canada and ate like a king.
Denys and all those drive through places? I didn't eat in the roadsides, except for money (taco bell), and "tea" and "coffee" - and that's another discussion entirely.

I guess it pays to know where you are going. If you came to my city you would probably hate the food. If I told you where to go, you might love it.

Yukka, I hate sauerkraut... however, I do like the juices in some brats and what not.
It's the actual stuff I don't like, haha.

can't get enough of the pizza! when i was in NY last christmas i had pizza 4 days straight, and i think one of those was both lunch and dinner.
there are a few awesome pizza places out here, but not like NY where every corner has a quality establishment. but hey at least we have burritos.
