The good old question:
MediaTemple or Dreamhost, which one? Here's the pros (form my POW)
Dreamhost: PHP5, unlimited mySQL DB, unlimited subdomanis and websites.
MT:dedicated IP, urchin stats, great support.
The price is the same. What would you choose?
And, you have any discount code?

unliited subdomains... i like that.
you only get 5 with M T

DH

both are good. just wish that MT would start making upgrades. Their mysql and php versions are waAAAAAAY behind.
use: "supersimple" and get $90 off a 1 year plan at DH

i have dh but hate the control panel. never tried MT but i much prefer any host with cpanel

DO NOT sign up to Dreamhost.
they have had mail problems, including no mail for months. the sites hosted there jkeep going down and as for customer service! It doesn't exist.Seriously - the service they provide is the worst I have ever come across.
From the moment I signed up I was treated like a moron. All the mail problems, according to them were 'problems with your set-up'. Even after I mailed them screengrabs of the settings etc they still wouldn't tell me what was wrong.
It wasn't until I threatened them with court action that they finally refunded my money even though they have a 97 day guarantee and my account was only a month old.I'm now with Netgator - http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-…

That sums them up really. I'm guessing that they are too nervous to roll out PHP5 and MySQL5, or simply incapable of running both (as they should).I was considering a switch to MT a while back, and they lost out because of this.
1&1 (surprisingly) was way ahead of most hosts with PHP5 and MySQL5 support.

I have Lunar Pages and love them...they give you a free domain for life too. http://www.lunarpages.com

MT have PHP 5 and MySQL 4.1 - Shared Server 6 - released as a beta in June - i think you can have it if you ask for it
- moth0
Beta hosting? That's about as reassuring as 'beta' airbags.

DH is a sinking ship. Hosting and mail problems aside, the fact that they have been rated an 'F' by the BBB should be enough.

monkeyshine, how are the transfer rates for you? I've seen in some reviews that they are rather slow.
Does that hold true for you?

DO *NOT* SIGN UP FOR DREAMHOST. It doesn't matter if their deals look cheaper because no matter how many services they claim to add to your account it doesn't change the fact that your entire server will go down for days at a time each month. And to top it off, your outgoing mail server will randomly decide it doesn't like certain domains leaving you totally screwed.
I highly recommend Pair. (http://www.pair.com) Not the cheapest. Not the latest software either. But it's built to handle real business-sized websites and databases. It NEVER goes down and their support is great. They have a long running reputation for following through and getting it right the first time.

I've been with DH a while now and they've been great. Support normally within 24hrs from UK, if not 30 max. Downtime around 2hrs total in a year perhaps. You get 97$ for referring people too which is nice. Cant fault them really. They used to limit cpu but dont now and their one click installs - wordpress etc are good. Your choice, I tht MT were expensive a while ago though

"... downtime around 2 hrs total in a year..."
You obviously don't check your websites that often. Dreamhost used to have stats detailing the uptime of your websites but of course these stats were faked. Eventually they deleted the stats page when it became painfully obvious that the supposed 99.9% uptime was just horribly wrong.

MT does me justice. no complaints. top notch customer service.
Basically, consider what your plans for the next year.. are you running a portolio site or walmart.com. I'd choose better service over unlimited sub domains, I mean what's the pint of having 100 domains if they aren't up and you can't receive your mail?
- heavyt0
agreed, MT has better service. DH is a great place to fool around, if you dont mind it being down once in a while.
I am looking into http://slicehost.com .
They seem to be on the ball, and offer root access on their plans so that you can install whatever versions you want.supposedly, they are going live this week.

Definitely only use DH as a sandbox of sorts. Testing rails apps and the like.
If you are having a lot of problems at dreamhost you also ask them to switch the machine you are on. Sometimes this helps.
MT is pretty solid all around. But I host several sites on Segment Publishing (http://segpub.com) and they are really, really rad. More money, but get what you pay for.
lighttpd and great Rails support.
