Take 2 weeks minimum for Japan, stay in 2-3 star hotels (the standards are far higher than outs) drink shit loads of beer and eat as much as you can and stay open minded and take lots of photos. If anything, get yourself on a road trip coach deal from Tokyo to Fukuaka. Don't buy any electronics unless you can get tax off (not much but better than nothing) and smile.

I happen to love Kyoto. Go to Kyoto.
Tokyo is of course megacool (if you don't get numb from trying to figure out the train system)...

june-july is rainy season, august-september is typhoon season. last one is better though
tokyo is awesome, but the lost in translation feeling do occur. kyoto is marvelous, reserve at least a week there (maybe even more than tokyo).

thanks...
imm gonna do it this year deffo

tokyo is expensive, Kyoto is... kyoto is a tourist trap don't stay for more than a day unless you're serious about geisha spotting, Kansai pref. and Osaka is the best for nightlife and entertainment and yakuza spotting. be sure to snack on some Osaka style okinomiyaki which is different to the Hiroshima version. Oh and eat some octopus/squid balls, can't remember what they're called now takiyaki or something.
Japan's always been the most enjoyable holiday for me. I grew up my whole life in western culture and it's so refreshing to spend some time outside of it. Oh and be amazed at how well the transport system works especially how the train indicators count down to the second for when a train arrives.

my GF will be mad for the geisha, but thanks for the warning - is it possible to day-trip to kyoto and osaka from tokyo without it taking ages out of the day?

Osaka! Go to Osaka!
It's near enough to Kyoto and Nara that you can do day trips to see the touristy stuff, but the downtown Namba and Dotonbori area are amazing! I went in March, I'm going back next year.

I'm going to see a friend who lives there, so free place to stay, free tour guide, so thankful. I probably wouldn't go otherwise - don't like being frustrated.
On our list of things to do:
Lots of newish architecture, post modern stuff.
Lots and lots of sushi, OMG I can't wait to eat the food there.
A trip to an old insane asylum.
Karaoke, odd because I'd never do that here, but should be a blast there.
Seeing a few bands.
Day trip(s) to Osaka, Yokahoma.
Possibly, possibly, hiking Mt. Fuji.

trooperbillI managed to do Kyoto in a day but it will require some serious travelling. I'd set out early and if possible (budget permitting) ride one of the shinkansen bullet trains to get you to a to b in a flash. You can't 'do' Kyoto and Osaka together, you'll miss out on so much. At least a day each!

Oh, and passing out my band's CD at bars at night, coming back to Chicago with a t-shirt that says "Big in Japan"
- i_monk0
I hope your Osaka day trip includes the night, because you have to see Namba at night!
Don't forget to pose with the Glico Man.

We might go do an overnighter and stay in a hostel or sleep on the street or something.
He and I should be able to have a total blast. He's had a couple friends go see him, but we're longtime friends, he's pretty excited that I'm going over there. All the other people wanted to do was go to used panty stores. I mean, we'll do that too, but not every day.

If you're strapped for somewhere to sleep or stay, then consider booking time at either an internet cafe with sleeping areas (yeah they do) or even a kareoke room to crash and chill out. You don't need to sing, just order beer and food and lie down for a few hours – might work out cheaper than a hotel as you only pay by the hour. YMCA's are also in pretty good shape. If you're in Kyoto, consider visiting an Onsen but only with a Japanese speaking guide. Naked+confused+no Japanese = no fun.

Kyoto? A tourist trap? I'm confused...but then again my wife is Japanese, so I never do "touristy" stuff...I love Kyoto because so much pf it is so damn old..and I spent a night in a buddhist temple there and was the only person in the morning at 4:30 am watching this whole abbey of monks chanting..it was stunning..and the YKyotot train station is an architectural marvel/monstrosity..
