If you're strapped for somewhere to sleep or stay, then consider booking time at either an internet cafe with sleeping areas (yeah they do) or even a kareoke room to crash and chill out. You don't need to sing, just order beer and food and lie down for a few hours – might work out cheaper than a hotel as you only pay by the hour. YMCA's are also in pretty good shape. If you're in Kyoto, consider visiting an Onsen but only with a Japanese speaking guide. Naked+confused+no Japanese = no fun.
