"Dave Chappelle is a comedian (an artist). It's his job to provoke and provide social commentary. He's selling himself as a performer. Big difference. He also doesn't hide from criticism, he's unapologetically a comedian."
Lets flip this:
Advertising is an art. Ads provoke and provide social commentary. Ads like this are selling themselves as hip and cool and edgy. Corporations responsible for these ads hide from criticism every chance they get.

305, that was fun. I would disagree that advertising could ever be considered an art, nor should it provide social commentary other than maybe a documentarian role.

(Jul 6 06, 14:07)haha. go back to school. sign up for marketing 101. or, read a book about it. both will tell you you're dead wrong.
sorry man.

Almost every ad has a comment (whether subversive or not) on society and culture. Maybe they shouldn't, but they do.

sociopath:
One who is affected with a personality disorder marked by antisocial behavior.--
i don't think this is really a quality of all corporations. a lot of corporations want to be friends with as many people. that is not sociopathic. whether it is honest or going with a display of integrity is another issue. the thing is: i don't see why a "lesser" friend is not allowed at all to put his two cents into public debate.
what i hate more is that these companies are censored for reasons of distrust or whatver then to see a company making a stupid or dangerous statement in public.
i would love to see mcDonalds put up an ad with a butcher with beheaded little chicks under his knife, artfully photographes. it's honest and stirs controversy in an open and relatively honest way instead of a dancing clown and happy smiling families on billboards instead of the truth..

sorry for my bad engrish, tis late.. ;)

If you were to analyse the type of idealism(sexual, financial, etc,) that the advertising industry typically injects into society you'll probably find that it's detrimental to the health of soceity by in large. Of course there are more responsible exceptions to my above generalization. That's all I'm saying.

Nothing's wrong with these ads. They are obviously getting everyones attention. no racism. anyone who says this shows rasicm clearly is looking too much into this. Good job by Sony to not be affraid to put this out.
- Mimio0
THA. Why should they have to be courageous to display these ads if it's clearly not racial in your opinion?

(Jul 6 06, 14:18)like controversy, again, this is a reflection of society's state itself, not the cause, imho!
- Mimio0
Janne, Are you saying that society is asking to adopt the interests of corporations as it's own? Groups of individuals bereft of their own self-interests?
- Mimio0
In plain words. Advertisers should never tell people who or what they are or should be. I've been pretty consistent on that point I think.

(Jul 6 06, 14:26)you are making too many steps at once now, mimio. your conclusion makes seems to follow the logic that people are generally sheep accepting everything that's been fed to them.
it's a struggle. struggle is good. struggle leads to new insights and opens up borders.
PC is the end of struggle but hides controversial subjects like dead stinking cats in a basement. it will ultimately suffocate society and make us extremely judgemental and narrow minded.
so yes, i can see the merits of controversy in advertising, i mean come on, how many people see an ad vs. how many people start discussions on hot topics?
society needs triggerhappy debate aggregators imho.
it is good we are having rough times talking about things. but things are being talked about more and more openly.
and i think that is great!!
as long as we use our brains and come up with defense i can only applaud corporations to be on the other side and trigger controversy and debate, it's what keeps the public discourse alive!

i think stereotyping is much much worse! i remember i saw a small panel in a fastfood restaurant here which advertised mexicano's. a mexicano here is a large piece of fat meat with a spicy taste to it. the meat is consistently advertised with a mexican with a stash and typical mexican sombrero on a mule next to a cactus..
that worries me more in terms of degrading cultures..

It's all covered in Demolition Man

This is all covered in Demolition Man, i mean.

stereotypes suck. People stereotype me all the time as a stereotyper, but really they are feeding off their own stereotypes. I really dont give a fuck what people think anymore, so eat me. I'll see you in the afterlife.
- Crouwel0
hahah 305. good point, lol!
- flavorful0
Hi flavorful...if you are nto offended by the ad you're a callous, racist bastard.
TheBlueOne
(Jul 6 06, 13:13)I'm a callous, racist bastard.
- flavorful0
well but if it was a polish worker with a stash and all fighting a red haired irish guy you would all be angry and pissed about it, flavor!
;)
Crouwel
(Jul 6 06, 13:14)Haha, you know I would laugh hysterically.
Though the polish worker would be fighting his shadow and the red haired irish guy would be too busy laughing on the ground, and both of them would have no idea how to play the black psp or the white one.
