considering getting one of these (along with some land) as an alternative to buying a flat/house.
what u reckon?

looks nice that...

It's a great idea, but...
I looked into prefab here in the US and it blew my mind how much $$: land, getting water/sewer, other addition costs etc. It ended up being very, very expensive after all of the loose ends were tied up.
Just an FYI.

yo davey... how much was it?

(Jun 5 06, 10:22)Can't remember how much exactly...it was way more than expected. But a lot of the costs are broken down here on the LV home site, which the LVL home is what I was loking at, within one of the downloadable PDFs:
The most expensive thing: LAND, it's ain't cheap!

This is a great resource for all of the available prefab homes worldwide. I'm way into the movement of this type of architecture:

ya land would be the most expensive... unless you want to live out in the boonies

(Jun 5 06, 1Exactly!
You could have a sick piece of land in the boonies and it would look like a Dwell cover...but where the hell would you work? How's the commute time you know?
That's the major roadblock...it's just not realistic for most of us.

i dont think land price is too bad in scotland

yep unfortunately the prefab promise of inexpensive living just isn't realized yet. I'd like to do a combo shipping container/straw bale house but my wife isn't down yet ;)

i have a client who is in manufactured (trailer) homes and modular (better than site built) homes
the guidelines on premanufactured homes seems to far surpass those of site built in building requirements, assembly conditions, and materials used
his prefab homes are delivered in no more than 5 pieces and can be mounted to a foundation or basement in a day
the walls are 2 inches thicker and better insulated
most clients even brick the home once it erected to result in a solid non movable home with 9 inch walls as opposed to the site built homes of only 4 inches that can be placed anywhere not just specially zoned areas
dollar for dollar most american site built homes between $100,000 - $500,000 are constructed of cheap materials and are not worth half the sum of their parts the day of move in

If land is inexpensive in Scotland, half the battle is over...so get your prefab on!
Most people are scared to take the prefab risk, I agree. My plan was to buy 2 acres of land, then build a yurt ($15K - 30' radius) and live in it for a year or so (http://www.pacificyurts.com) while I paid off my land and build my prefab dream.
Or...take the easy way out and buy a bungalow in th city...which is what I did.

my brother in law builds homes and assembles prefabs. some of the prefab stuff is amazing, things like recycling the steam from your shower to heat the rest of your home blows my mind. your best bet is to find a development where you can buy an empty lot that has all the utility connections ready to go.

(Jun 5 06, 10:37)All true, they are WAY better built than stick built homes, from a drunken contractor!

(Jun 5 06, 11:07)YES! Can you believe it? The LV homes are some of the best designed and most affordable prefab to come out of the US production market.
- Momentum20
now you just gotta find a lot to build it on!

those all look pretty nice
